Welcome back to the start of the summer term! Hopefully everyone has had a wonderful break and is well rested!
We have started our net and wall games unit this week. We have talked about which sports make up 'net and wall games' and discussed the common skills that are used, such as footwork, reactions and accuracy. We all looked at the ready position and practised getting into it in various ways from running, sitting down and even lying down!
Years 1 and 2 started by looking at how we hold a tennis racket. We moved on to balancing a ball on our rackets, focussing on keeping the racket level and the ball in the middle. We practised rolling the ball around the racket and pushing the ball along the floor. We finished off by trying to bounce the ball on our rackets, counting how many we could do in a minute.
Years 3 and 4 looked at using control to balance our ball on our rackets while standing on one leg, squatting, and moving around. We tried rolling the ball around the racket and moved on to bouncing the ball up and down. We tried some extra skills like around the world and flipping the racket around while bouncing the ball. We finished with a racket and ball race (like egg and spoon) and a keepy uppy competition.
Year 5 and 6 also practised using control to balance our ball on our rackets while balancing, squatting, and moving around. We rolled the ball around the racket and moved on to bouncing the ball up and down. We got into pairs and focussed on accuracy by using a hoop to aim our bounce into during rallies. We stood further apart if we managed to hit the target, to make it harder. We then finished with a keepy uppy competition and had a go at some tricks!
Have a lovely weekend!
