News from last week –

Well, what a surprise to be returning to home learning this week. You have all taken on our new way of learning fantastically. It was so lovely to see all of your responses to our activities and videos.

In our writing this week, we continued with the theme of Christmas. You started by writing diaries and sharing what Christmas had been like for you. I loved reading these and hearing about all the fantastic things you did at Christmas. You then went on to write a setting description about all the snow we had been experiencing. I was so amazed by all your fantastic vocabulary, similes and metaphors. We then wrote reviews of our favourite toys/presents we received this Christmas even considering how we could improve them further. At the end of the week, we completed a spag.com activity.

In our Maths this week, we recapped areas we had learnt last term. There was a large focus on developing our arithmetic knowledge and recapping methods for multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. We also started to recap how to calculate perimeter.

In our Bookclub activities, we spent time reading, completing comprehension tasks around New Year and completing book reviews online.

Well done to everyone for a fantastic first week of home-learning. I am so proud of you all. I hope that you all have a well-deserved rest.

Year 5 News for this week -

Wow, Year 5! I don't know what to say other than wow! You have all continued to work unbelievably hard this week and take on all the new tasks which have been set for you. I am so proud of the work you have achieved and this could not have happened without the support of family at home so a massive thank you to everyone.

In our English lessons this week, we have been following a new TalkforWriting scheme based on Wonderful Wizards. Throughout the week, we have all had to unpick the features of a persuasive letter. We have explored boastful vocabulary, imperative verbs and the use of questioning. You also completed a comprehension activity based on the letter you read. At the end of our week, we have designed our own school and decided what questions, vocabulary and key information we are going to include in our own persuasive letters next week.

In our Maths lessons this week, we have been working through our Power Maths books yet again. At the start of the week, we recapped perimeter from our learning before Christmas. Then, we moved on to learn all about area. The children have learnt how to use our formula area = length x width to work out the area of shapes and we have also learnt to compare the area of shapes.

You have many afternoon activities set for you this week including Geography, History, Music, Computing, Science, RE and Wellbeing. During History, you explored what pre-historic meant and learnt about the pre-historic period using timelines representing billions of years ago! You accessed the first of our Music lessons on Charanga and learnt about the life-cycle of plants in Science. In our Wellbeing session, you created your own jars of happiness. Again, I want to say how proud I am of all the fantastic work that you have done this week. Well done Team!

Have an enjoyable and restful weekend,

Miss Welch
