Y6 Weekly News

Back home  /  News  /  Y6 Weekly News

I cannot believe how much we get through in a week Y6. You have worked so hard and your dedication to my tasks is impressive. Well done to you all.

We continued with our four operations unit this week in maths, with a focus on short and long multiplication. We revisited our Y5 unit to recap previously learnt strategies and then chose as a class to complete fluency tasks. We will use this knowledge to now tackle our Y6 reasoning problems next week.

In english this week we have worked hard to create a shared piece of writing. We have collated our ideas and tweaked them to improve. We have then used our targets to up level our writing. Editing has also been a focus in class this week. A super job Year 6.

In book club we have all read with an adult, changed our books if needed and enjoyed our shared reading books. New questions have been set.

In spelling and grammar this week we have continued our focus on suffixes. We used our recent lessons to assess our knowledge of Y5 and Y6 misconception words. We are really enjoying our new spelling programme and the activities we complete.

In science this week we focused on investigating the need to evolve? We were introduced to the Bird Beak Buffet. This experiment allowed us to think about natural selection. We used everyday objects to model different bird beaks and gathered different types of food up into "stomachs" also known as paper cups! We predicted which beak would gather the widest variety of food and why. We completed a data collection table which we will analyse next week.

In geography this week we considered different countries around the world and how wealthy they are. Using our atlases, we identified high, medium and low income from across the world and created a table with our results. Next week we will consider if judging countries on wealth alone is fair.

In RE this week we used our knowledge of how Christians describe God to create a piece of artwork. We thought about the Bible verses we studied last week and using media of our choice designed interesting ideas. We will place them on our display for us all to enjoy.
In music this week we enjoyed using our glockenspiels to accompany the song Happy. We also recorded our songs for Harvest and will be sharing them with you in the near future.

In computing we have used the Code Studio programme.

We have also taken part in the daily mile, our PE lesson and a PHSE lesson taught by Mrs Jenkins.

Unfortunately, today should have been our second Year 6 worship to share with school. After recording themselves, the Ambassadors and House Captains took their turn to deliver their messages. Our school computers would not recognise the video format, so we are hoping to now share them on Monday. Each week a different group will present worship as the bubble restrictions have limited contact with members of staff.

We finished our week by completing a times tables test and reviewing our Spag.com homework.

I have shown my children how to access Power Maths at home today and they all now have a login which is stuck in their reading diaries/reading response books. This will be useful for any home tasks I would like them to complete and if they are ever at home due to the virus.

I also have the opportunity to use a programme called Maths.co.uk. This follows a similar layout to Spag.com and I will be using this programme intermittently for activities to be completed with your support. Again, their login details have been stuck into their diaries/reading response books.

New homework has been set. This includes: Spag.com online, TT Rock Stars and regular reading aloud with comprehension questions being completed ready for next week. Please could you encourage your child to play on TT Rock Stars as often as possible. Times table knowledge on the tip of their tongues is of great help as we move through the Year 6 maths curriculum.

Maths.co.uk will also offer children a task to complete and Power Maths may be set too. I am asking children to visit these sites if they have a login to check if activities have been set. Homework details are in their reading response books ready to tick off. I will also upload a video to Seesaw to help children to login to Power Maths.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday.

Your teacher,
Mrs B.
