Preschool Remember

Home » News » Preschool Remember

The last few days we have learned about why we wear a Poppy.

Within our personal, social and emotional development, we discussed why we wear a poppy and talked about Remembrance Day. We use a poppy because they are the flowers that grew on the battle fields where World War 1 was fought. We then shared the story 'Where the Poppies now Grow' by Hilary Robinson and discussed how it may feel for soldiers to leave their friends and families to go to war "A little bit worried", "Sad", "A bit scared".

Within our communication and language development, we learned some new words, Remembrance, Veteran, Thankful, died, peace, fought, war, bomb. We talked about why this day is special and discovered that on November the 11th we remember the people who fought in the war so that we can have the life we have today.

To support our physical development, we have stood tall like soldiers and we have marched, turned and stopped on command. We have also used a knife to spread red icing onto a biscuit to make a Poppy biscuit.

We made a card for the soldiers as part of our literacy development and thought about why we say thank you. ""To remember the soldiers", "The soldiers died in the war" "Cos you died in the war and fight the nasty mans".

For our mathematics development we have been buying and selling Poppies from our Preschool Poppy stall. We discussed how money raised by veterans selling poppies goes to support the soldiers, ex-soldiers and families of soldiers.

To develop our understanding of the world, we watched the Cbeebies poppy animation clip. We also watched the 2 minutes silence on you tube so that we had an understanding before the event. We then took part in 2 minutes silence at 11am.

We have been busy creating Poppy crafts as part of our expressive arts and design development, we have made a Poppy, a Poppy wreath and painted a field of Poppies. We have also learned a Poppy song.

Lest we forget.
