As you know, this year is the year of the National Census!
In school we marked this important occasion by taking part in the National Census' 'Let's Count' campaign on Thursday.
On Thursday, we were introduced to the 'Let's Count' data cats who are called Splotch, Doc, Digit, Scout and Scribble. The told us what census is and why it is so important. Can you remember what a census is? Need a recap? Check out the video here.
The census is a count of all the people and households in England and Wales. It builds
a snapshot of life, based on housing, facilities, jobs, transport, people's ages and the
languages spoken. Did you know that the first census was held in 1801, and has been held every ten years since then (except in 1941 due to the Second World War). Wow! When your family takes part next weekend, they are making history! How cool is that!
In school we carried out our own census. Our school census was based on a topic that is always close to our hearts . . . reading and our love of books. Each class was asked a question. Preschool and Reception were asked what their favourite nursery rhyme was. Year One and Year 2 were set the task of finding each classes favourite book. Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 had to find out who their classes favourite author was. Each class asked the question and conducted a survery. They recorded their data using tally charts. These charts were then turned into an array of graphs. Take a look at the pictures to see a snapshot of all our hard work.
Your wonderful work will be turned into a display which we will use to enter the Let's Count Competition! Exciting! Wish us luck.
