We have continued to use compensation as one of our
calculation strategies in Maths this week. We use this to help us adjust
numbers when subtracting. It was great to practise this skill by drawing each
step on a blank number line. We then moved on to adjusting. We used to know this as equivalent difference in Year 4. We learnt about using this strategy for addition and subtraction problems. At the end of our week, we then learnt about using rounding to help us to estimate answers.
We have been wonderful writers this week, completing our
journey narratives. As authors, we used our writer’s knowledge to take our
readers on adventures to two different locations. At the end of our week, we then continued to publish one of our pieces of writing from earlier this term.
For Reading this week, we enjoyed reading our big cat books.
In Computing, we explored the question: How can search make
money? We learned how websites can be sponsored and how some are listed as
adverts. With this knowledge, we discussed how we could move past these to find
a wider range of information.
On Monday, we also took part in our whole-school Danceathon with great enthusiasm. It was wonderful to be involved in such an uplifting event.
Our first PE lesson this week was focused on attacking and defending in football. We learnt skills to improve our participation in a match. We also enjoyed our PE lesson with Coach Beth.
For our music lesson, we spilt into two teams. Each team played one of the sections of My Dog has Fleas. Then we swapped over. We sounded really good! We were on-time and we were really pleased. We played both the rehearsal version, and the performance version. We then moved on to learn about chords. We learnt and practised how to play chord C.
In Heartsmart this week, we learnt that listening to the truth is HeartSmart and it changes us for the better whilst choosing to listen and believe the lies about ourselves has the reverse effect. Jesus answered, “I am the way. And I am the truth and the life.” John 14:6
Our RE lessons this week focused on the true meaning of Christmas. We spent time in our lesson discovering what we can learn about Christian beliefs of Christmas through popular carols. We really enjoyed listening to the songs and recording the messages we think were within them.
Science this week was all about how plants reproduce. After taking cuttings during forest school, we built on this knowledge of asexual reproduction. Using new cuttings, we were able to plant our own copies of these plants and learnt about the process of
asexual reproduction even more. We also learnt, by looking at examples of bulbs and tubers, how other plants can reproduce. We also recapped how flowering plants reproduce through the process of pollination.
In French this week, we have learnt how to pronounce different towns in France and we started to compare them to places that are near us.
We had our first DT lesson this week. Our DT unit for this term is based on adapting a recipe to add nutritional value. Our first lesson of this was on learning where our food comes from. We learnt about the process of beef and how this is carefully reared, stored and turned into meat for our food.
Maths.co.uk has been set for this week.
We hope you are having a lovely weekend and a lovely new week to come!
