REHeartsmartEnglishAnti-bullying

We began our English lessons by exploring our example text, A
journey through the sky, which describes the journey of a cautious hang-glider
pilot through the sky alongside a flock of swifts, navigating wind turbines,
storms, and a looming cyclone before safely returning to earth. This week, we have used role play to develop our setting description writing. We have also explored the language and structure features within the text as well as examples of writer's knowledge we would like to use in our own work.

Our reading sessions this week have been based on reading aloud.

Our spelling focus this week was on the silent lesson 't'.

We started our Maths lessons this week by recapping bridging for subtraction. We have then moved on to learn about using the strategy of finding the difference through number lines for addition and comparison bar models. At the end of the week, we learnt how to use near doubles to mentally calculate addition problems.

In our afternoons, we have covered a range of lessons from Science, to Heartsmart, PE and RE.

We have enjoyed two PE lessons again this week. Our first lesson was all about developing our passing techniques. We have learnt about improving control and also using space to avoid attackers. We put this into practice to play a game. Our second lesson this week with Coach Beth was focused on throwing and catching.

We had our music lesson with Miss Holland this week.

This week in school, we celebrated anti-bullying week. We have had two lessons around using our power of good to speak out about bullying. We discussed different bullying myths and gave ideas about how we would deal with each situation. We then looked at an image displaying bullying behaviours and spoke about who was involved and who was also a bystander. Our lessons were focused on us having to power to do good.

Our Heartsmart lesson this week focused on the benefits of a good night’s sleep. We learnt that a lack of sleep may lead to finding it difficult to
concentrate, forgetfulness, making mistakes and feeling stressed or anxious.
We learnt that children should get between 9 and 11 hours sleep. We focused on the importance of sleep and keeping a routine. The children have then been challenged to fill in a sleep diary over the past week to track their sleep.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell
in safety.
Psalm 4:8

Our Science lesson this week enabled us to learn all about the differences between different life cycles. We have learnt about amphibians, fish, birds, mammals and vertebrates. We were amazed to learn about many of the processes that living things experience. We recorded examples of these life cycles in our books and have been able to recognise the similarities and differences.

In RE this week, we started a new unit. We are working on answering the question: Where in the Bible is the Christmas story? How does the nativity story/birth of Jesus fit into God’s Big Story? We started by creating a list of the key points of the nativity story. We were then challenged to find the Christmas story in the Bible. We learnt that the story is only recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Matthew 1:1- 2:23, Luke 1:5-2:40. We were so surprised to find that not everything we knew about the nativity story was in the Bible.

We enjoyed welcoming John into our classroom this week from Cheshire Fire and Rescue. He taught us all about road safety. In particular, we learnt about where it is safe to cross. We learnt about zebra, toucan and puffin, pelican crossings. We learnt about the phrase stop, look, listen and think.

We also compared our brains to a computer and spoke about the importance of wearing a helmet to protect our brains. We spoke about being safe and being seen. We even learnt about the importance of fitting our helmet safely. We took lots of important messages from this time this week.

We have also enjoyed our Year 5 visit this week. Please see our other post for more information!

Maths.co.uk homework has just been set.
