In Maths, we concluded our work on estimation by looking at tickets sold at the London Olympics in 2012. We practised using approximate numbers to find totals and then used these to calculate differences. The rest of this week has been about revisiting column addition from Year 4 using larger numbers. We are now able to add 5 digit numbers with increasing amount of bridging. Our confidence is growing as we continue to follow this method and make our calculation clear.
As writers, we revisited our knowledge of relative clauses. We explored them in lots of different ways—through online activities, spotting relative clauses in texts, and creating our own examples using a word bank of relative pronouns.
Our English lessons for the rest of this week were focused on learning and unpicking our new example text. We have focused on rehearsing this text orally. Each table took a different paragraph to learn and add actions to. We have then shared this through a joint rehearsal. We have then been on to explore the vocabulary within the text, the structure and very importantly the writing skills used within it. These will become our focus for this piece of work.
Our spelling focus this week has been on words ending in -ibly and -ably.
For reading this week, we continued to share our big cat books.
We have completed some of our end of unit assessments this week.
In Computing, we tackled three different tasks to learn how to make web searches more specific. We also discovered what features of a webpage help it rank higher in search results, giving us a better understanding of how search results can be influenced.
Our focus for RE this week continued to be on the true meaning of Christmas. We focused on some of the symbols linked to Christmas celebrations – the angels, carols, the epiphany, gifts and more. We focused on why these are important to the meaning of Christmas and created our own Christmas cards to celebrate this.
We have enjoyed our second DT lesson. For this, we taste tested existing bolognese sauces and decided our preferences for a sauce. We also spent time to research unusual bolognese ingredients that we may choose to use to adapt our recipe.
Music this week involved learning more ukulele skills.
Our PE lesson with Coach Beth took place this week. In our lesson with Mr Jay, we have learnt about attacking and defending skills used in football.
During our Heartsmart lesson this week, we learnt that we can all find ourselves in situations where people are doing something that we know is wrong, but we
feel pressured to join in. We learnt that this sometimes happen with people we don’t know, it can sometimes be
through expectations on social media but often it is with people within our friendship group. We role played some situations to help us to understand how we can respond to events like these. We learnt that being HeartSmart means being a true friend and knowing who your true friends are. It is about learning how to be a
powerful person and be in control of what you say and do.
Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way
of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you
will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.
Romans 12:2
We completed our unit of science on living things this week. We consolidated our knowledge of plant reproduction, animals life cycles and parts of a flower plant by completing our end of unit assessment.
We spent some time this week to consolidate some History learning from earlier on in the train linked to the development of the railways.
Our first full run through of our Christmas service took place this week.
We have enjoyed opening our class advent calendar this week and trying to complete each task set for us.
