We began the week by completing our writer’s knowledge task in Writing, and we made many wonderful contributions when discussing how Cassi, our main character, was feeling. Across the rest of our week, we have then created a mood palette of ideas to use in our writing, written a short incidental write in the form of a character description and planned and written the first paragraph of our own journey narrative. You have all made a brilliant start!
In maths, our confidence in reordering multi-step calculations has grown considerably. We have spent a few lessons this week consolidating our knowledge pf this and making sure we were using number bonds to assist our learning. We have then moved on to learn about using the skill of compensating to change/round numbers to make them easier to add together. We talked about the importance of learning these mental methods to help us to decide which would be best used to approach different calculations.
Our reading lessons have helped us get to know a poem with 21 stanzas! We explored the poem about a Victorian workhouse, focusing on retrieving key facts and information.
In Computing, we were fantastic webpage designers this week. Year 5, you shone with both your teamwork and your confidence in designing a webpage all about Wellbeing at Wybunbury.
Our RE lessons this week, continued on the theme of Christmas. After reading the stories from Matthew and Luke this week, we looked at some artists drawings and attempted to reorganise both stories. We then spent time to learn and consider who both authors wrote for creating their stories. We also answered questions in our questful map this week.
History has been an important focus this week. We have completed our History unit by thinking about who used the railways when they were first introduced as well as the different service that classes of Victorians would have experienced. We enjoyed looking at a piece of artwork from the first passenger train journey and were impressed to see what an important occasion this appeared to be. In our later lesson, we then answered the question: 'What changes did the railways bring to Crewe?' We enjoyed using digimaps to find Crewe and look at how it changed over many years.
In our Art lessons this week, we completed our poetry zines and found a place to add our intaglio print from our Y5 visit. We took a step back to consider the process of making our zines and what we liked about this.
During our Heartsmart lessons, we have completed our first unit 'Be Heartsmart' by reflecting on what we have learned over this unit by completing the Boris self-assessment.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23. We then started our new unit '
Don't Forget to Let Love in'. We heard Boris' story and remembered that when other people use kind words or actions to show us they love us, we need to remember
to ‘Let Love in’ and allow it to strengthen our hearts.
The second command is this: Love your neighbour as you love yourself.
Mark 12:3. We then loved learning about Gunner – a war hero. We completed a true and false game to learn lots about Gunner. We realised that he is a great reminder of our message for this Heartsmart topic – although it seemed
that he wasn’t valuable – just a stray dog, he saved many lives and was a treasure to many.
When birds are sold, two small birds cost only a penny. But not even one
of the little birds can die without your Father’s knowing it. God even
knows how many hairs are on your head. So don’t be afraid. You are
worth much more than many birds.
Matthew 10:29-31
Our PE lesson with Coach Beth was focused on throwing and catching. We played handball games after we had looked at being able to move quickly with agility in a cone stealing game. In our lesson with our Thrive coaches, we have learnt how to use a long strike pass to be able to pass a long distance across our football pitch.
In music this week, we played My Dog has Fleas on our ukuleles. We discussed in pairs whether we prefer to strum with, or without a pick. A few of us are happy to continue strumming using our index finger. The rest of us would really like to try using a pick. We will trial this next week.
Maths.co.uk homework has been set this week.
Have a wonderful weekend.
