Year 3 Weekly News 27.02.26

What a fantastic first week back we have had in Year 3!

This week in Maths, the children consolidated their understanding of the 4 times table and began learning the 8 times table. We spent time investigating the connections between the 2, 4 and 8 times tables, discussing how our knowledge of the 2s and 4s can help us to learn the 8s. The children particularly enjoyed using our counting stick, with post-it notes showing the multiples of 8. We practised counting forwards and backwards, and when some of the post-it notes were removed, the children had to recall the missing multiples from memory. By the end of the week, the class were confidently counting forwards and backwards from any given multiple in the 8 times table and showed growing confidence in their recall.

In English, we concluded our non-chronological reports all about giants. The children worked hard to organise their writing under relevant subheadings and applied a range of literary skills to hook and engage the reader. We are incredibly proud of their final pieces and are very excited to begin our new writing unit next week!
In Reading, we explored Cinderella of the Nile. The children focused particularly on developing their inference skills this week. Using skimming and scanning techniques, they located evidence in the text to support their ideas and deepen their understanding.

In DT, we were introduced to the programming software Micro:bit. The children have been set an exciting project to design a piece of wearable technology that can be worn at night to help keep children safe when riding their bikes during the darker winter months. As a class, we discussed and agreed upon a clear set of design criteria to ensure our products will be successful. We are looking forward to developing our ideas further!

The children have also thoroughly enjoyed their learning in Geography, PSHE, PE, Music and Swimming this week.

We have had a fabulous week and are very much looking forward to what next week brings — especially World Book Day!
