Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 3!
As part of Science Week, we investigated why boats float. We also discussed what STEM means (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and talked about how these subjects are used in many different jobs. The children really enjoyed sharing examples of family members who work in STEM-related careers, and it was wonderful to hear about the wide range of roles represented in our class community.
The children then worked brilliantly in teams to design and build their own boats using card and baking paper. Once our boats were complete, we tested them by adding weight in the form of marbles to see which design was the strongest. There was great excitement as the numbers grew higher and higher. Our class record was an impressive 51 marbles before the boat finally sank! The children loved experimenting, predicting outcomes and improving their ideas.
In RE, we explored the stories of Saul and Mary Magdalene. We discussed how their lives were changed after encountering Jesus and thought carefully about how religion can help people change for the better. The children shared some thoughtful ideas during our discussions.
We also took part in a special CDAT collaborative writing project. Each school in the trust is writing a chapter in a story about a little lantern travelling around and helping people make positive changes. Our class created some beautiful watercolour artwork to accompany our chapter and worked together to write our part of the story. A member of our class then carefully wrote up the final version. We are incredibly proud of the finished result and are very excited to find out where the lantern travels to next!
In Maths, we began learning formal written methods for multiplication. The children were introduced to the grid method, then moved on to expanded form, and finally began practising compact short multiplication. They have shown great perseverance as they learn these new strategies.
In English, we have been busy planning our own narratives ready to begin writing next week. We were inspired by Nick Would’s The Scarab’s Secret and used its structure to help plan our stories. The children had lots of fun innovating their own characters and problems for their stories, and we are very excited to start writing them. We look forward to sharing the finished stories with you soon!
Finally, a reminder that next Tuesday is our Ancient Egyptian Theme Day. Please remember to dress up if you can, as we have a day full of exciting activities planned!
Thank you for your continued support.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Roney and Miss Summerfield.
