What an amazing first week back! I can't believe this is our last half term together. The children have returned to school with fantastic attitudes and have worked incredibly hard this week.
In maths, we concluded our Geometry unit by exploring right angles. The children created their own "angle eaters" to help identify and investigate right angles in a practical and engaging way. We also learned about parallel, perpendicular, vertical and horizontal lines. To make links between art and maths, we studied a Mondrian artwork and identified the different types of lines used within the piece.
In English, we began our exciting new class text – The Snorgh and The Sailor. At the start of the week, we investigated rumours that had been spreading around town about a mysterious creature called The Snorgh. The children examined newspaper headlines, wanted posters and pieces of evidence before stepping into role as different members of society, each with their own opinions about the creature.
We then held a courtroom debate to decide whether The Snorgh should be hunted, left alone or better understood. After carefully considering the evidence, the class voted to try and understand him.
As the story unfolded, we finally met The Snorgh and discovered that he is actually a harmless and rather lonely creature. This led to some thoughtful discussions about how rumours can create fear and misunderstanding. The children reflected on how their opinions had changed and considered the importance of seeking the truth before making judgements. To finish the week, the children wrote fabulous setting descriptions of The Snorgh's home, using similes and personification to create vivid imagery for the reader.
In Art, we completed our final pieces using charcoal. The children focused on creating gestural drawings and applied their understanding of shadow, tone and the chiaroscuro effect to produce some impressive and expressive artwork.
Our Science lesson involved an investigation into whether having longer legs allows you to jump further. The children carefully measured their legs, discussed how to conduct a fair test and recorded their results. Interestingly, our findings were inconclusive, with a range of different outcomes. This provided a great opportunity to discuss why scientific investigations do not always produce clear answers and the importance of evaluating results.
In Computing, we used J2Data to create our own branching databases. The children explored how databases can be used to sort and identify information by creating a series of yes/no questions to classify different animals. They carefully considered which questions would be the most effective and appropriate to help sort the animals accurately. The children enjoyed testing their databases and refining their questions to make them as efficient as possible.
In RE, we explored the concepts of rules and responsibility by discussing who makes rules and who follows them. We learned about the story of Moses and discovered how and why the Ten Commandments came about, considering their significance for believers.
Well done to everyone for such a fantastic start to the final half term.
Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Roney.
