Happy Friday Team!
On Monday, we arrived to find a lost penguin in our classroom! We have been helping to look after him while learning all about him. The children have been writing wonderful descriptions of our penguin, Peep. We have been working hard to include adjectives and even using exclamation marks (!) to show feelings and shouting. We saw some fantastic sentences like, “Peep is gone!” and “Come back, Peep!” In Math, we have been focusing on numbers to 20. We have been exploring one more and one less and using number lines to help us count forwards and backwards confidently. The children are becoming much more secure with their teen numbers – well done, Year 1! In our wider learning, we have started learning about Chester Zoo and the inspiring story of George Mottershead, who worked hard to create a zoo where animals are cared for properly. The children have been very interested in how the zoo first began. In Design and Technology, we have been experimenting with different ways to join fabric. We tried pinning, gluing and stapling to see which method was the strongest and most effective. We had some very thoughtful discussions about what worked best! In RE, we enjoyed a lovely spring walk, looking for signs of new life. We also acted out the story of Palm Sunday, helping us to understand why it is important to Christians. The children showed great enthusiasm and respect during our role play. This week has been Health and Safety Week, and we have been learning some very important life skills. The children learned how to call the emergency services, what number to dial, and what information they would need to give. We talked about what a hazard is and how to spot potential dangers. The children even visited the staff room where (shockingly!) lots of hazards had been left behind by the teachers! They did a fantastic job identifying what was unsafe and explaining why. We also learned about basic first aid and how we can help keep ourselves and others safe.
What a fantastic week of learning, creativity and excitement!
We hope everyone has a restful weekend and we look forward to another brilliant week ahead
