What an
unforgettable week it has been in Year 3! Our learning was brought to life as
we marched through the streets of Chester like real Roman soldiers, explored
ancient artefacts, and stepped back nearly 2,000 years into the world of Castra
Deva. The excitement from our Roman adventure has flowed into all
our lessons this week, making it a truly inspiring and energising few days of
learning.

This week, we immersed ourselves in the world
of poetry. The children explored how poets use rhythm, personification, idioms,
and carefully chosen vocabulary to paint vivid pictures in the reader’s mind.

We worked hard on answering inference questions about the setting of our poem
and summarised what each stanza was about. The children impressed with their
thoughtful ideas and growing confidence in analysing poetry.

What an incredible week for our history learning!

We began by placing the Romans on a historical timeline, looking at what was
happening elsewhere in the world at the same time. The children created
beautifully presented timelines to show their understanding.

On Wednesday, we took our much-anticipated
trip to the Grosvenor Museum in Chester — and it certainly didn’t disappoint!

We discovered that Chester was once called Castra Deva, an important Roman
settlement. The Romans expanded through the area, building forts to watch for
threats along the river. The children were fascinated to see real Roman
artefacts up close and even had the chance to hold some of them.

We then trained as Roman soldiers, led by a
Roman legionary! Marching through the city centre carrying our shields (scutums)
and chanting “sin, sin, sin, dex, sin” (“left, left, left, right,
left”), we definitely looked the part. Members of the public even stopped to
watch us!

When we reached the amphitheatre, we practised real Roman battle formations
such as the testudo (tortoise) and the wedge formation. It was an unforgettable
experience and the children absolutely loved stepping into the shoes of a Roman
soldier.

In computing, we explored the question: Can
images move?

The children created their own flipbooks, discovering how quickly changing
still images can create the illusion of motion. Lots of creativity (and
giggles!) filled the classroom as their animations came to life.

We continued developing our dribbling skills
using both tap passes and push passes. The children weaved through cone
“gates,” practised scanning the field, and then applied their skills in
mini-matches.

This week, we played on larger pitches to give everyone more time and space to
travel with the ball, build confidence, and decide when to dribble or pass.
Great teamwork was on display!

This week
we took part in the TT Rockstars England Rocks battle!

The children thoroughly enjoyed using the iPads to challenge each other and
improve their times tables speed. We had 52% of the class log on at home — well
done!

Mrs Roney has set us the challenge of reaching 100% next week as we aim to
bring home the TT Rockstars trophy in Friday’s celebration worship! Let’s go,
Year 3!

I
couldn’t be prouder of Year 3 this week. They represented our school
beautifully on our trip as they were exceptionally polite, respectful, and
incredibly considerate to members of the public. Their enthusiasm for learning
and their impeccable behaviour made it a joy to spend the day with them.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Roney.
