Dear Parents and Carers,
Despite the grey skies and endless rain at the
start of the week, we’ve had a fantastic time learning both inside and outside
the classroom this week.
In maths, we have been finding complements to
100 and 1000. Using bead strings, we explored missing number problems such as 23
+ ___ = 100. By sectioning off 23 on one end of the bead string, we could
clearly see the missing part on the other.
We used our number bonds to 10 to help with
the ones column – for example, knowing that 3 + 7 = 10 allowed us to
make a new group of ten and add it to the existing tens. We then transferred
this method to blank number lines, making small jumps to the next multiple of
ten, followed by a larger jump to 100.
By the end of the week, the children had truly
mastered this method! They were confidently explaining their reasoning and
checking their answers carefully by adding the ones and then the tens.
We began our brand-new English unit with an
exciting ‘hook’ activity. The children examined bird feathers, charred wood,
and a collection of key words — friendship, deceit, loyalty, and betrayal
— to make predictions about our new text and its characters.
Next, we were introduced to our main
character: Fox. The children generated wonderful adjectives and crafted
expanded noun phrases to describe his sly and cunning appearance. We also
practised building similes, thinking carefully about what we wanted to compare
and why. After collaborating as a class, everyone wrote their own simile poems
describing the sneaky, sly Fox. We can’t wait to start reading our new story
and find out what happens next!
In spelling, we focused
on words ending with the ‘ture’ suffix, such as picture, adventure, mixture, and creature. We explored how the ‘ture’ ending often sounds like ‘cher’ and usually follows a short vowel sound (e.g. adventure, capture).
The children sorted
words into patterns, played matching games, and created sentences to help them remember their
spellings. Encouraging your child to spot ‘ture’ words in their reading books or around the home is
a great way to reinforce this pattern.
In RE, we explored how God calls upon people.
We learnt about three Old Testament prophets — Moses and the burning bush,
Elijah and the whisper of God, and Isaiah and his vision in the temple. The
children then created their own “Prophet Profiles”, detailing how each
prophet was chosen and what their message was. To finish, they reflected on how
God might call them and what He might say.
Our PE focus this week was continuing to
develop the push and tap dribble. We played exciting 1 vs 1 games, where each
child’s number was called, and they had to sprint onto the pitch to battle for
possession and score! The children worked hard on keeping control of the ball,
looking up to scan the pitch, and finding space — a fantastic combination of
focus and teamwork!
In French, we learnt how to ask ‘How old are
you?’ (Quel âge as-tu ?) and respond correctly. To practise, we played a
fun board game in pairs. When a player landed on a birthday cake, their partner
had to ask them how old they were in French, and they had to count the candles
to answer! This was a great way to practise both speaking and listening skills
— and lots of fun too!
On Tuesday, we spent time learning about the
different coloured poppies and their meanings:
Red – remembrance of those who served in the First and Second World
Wars
Black – honouring African and Caribbean communities who contributed
to the war
White – a symbol of peace and the hope to end all wars
Purple – remembering the animals who served and died in war
We then created stunning poppy mosaics
inspired by our artwork. They are now proudly displayed in our classroom for
everyone to see.
Even though it was a wet and muddy session, we
had a wonderful time in Forest School! We learnt about artist Henri Matisse and
his style of ‘painting with scissors’. After looking at The Snail,
we gathered bright autumnal leaves and cut them into geometric shapes to make
our own abstract collages.
We discussed key artistic vocabulary such as shape,
colour, tone, geometric, form, and collage, and compared this week’s
large, bold pieces with last week’s smaller, intricate mosaics.
Later, we went on a minibeast hunt, using
trowels to dig and find creepy-crawly friends. Using Year 2’s bug hotel design,
we helped the minibeasts find the perfect new home — thinking carefully about
where they’d be happiest. To end our session, we gathered around the fire with
Mr Hadfield and enjoyed roasting marshmallows — a perfect finish to a wonderful
week!
Our new PSHE unit is called Don't forget to let the love in. We were
able to think about our new unit by thinking about how other people have shown
love to us and how we can show love to ourselves. This links to the bible
quote; The second command is this: Love your neighbour as you love yourself.
Mark 12:31.
We completed our geography learning this term with a fun review of
everything we have covered. The children enjoyed a guessing game using images
of imaginary lines, like the equator, which applied all our prior knowledge
beautifully. To round things off, everyone completed their end-of-unit quiz,
showing just how much we’ve learned over the past few weeks. Well done Year 3,
you shone in the way you applied your Geography knowledge this week.
Next week is a very exciting one for Year 3!

There
will be no Forest School
next week as we are heading off on our school trip to Chester to learn all about the Romans! We can’t wait to bring our
history topic to life and step back in time to see what Roman life was really
like.

On
Friday 21st November at
3:00pm,
it’s our Class
Worship Assembly.
We are so excited to share everything we have been learning about with you — we
can’t wait to see you there!
Homework
has been set on maths.co.uk
this week. Please can all children also spend time practising on TT Rockstars at
home. We are eager to restore
our victory as top dogs and earn back our rightful TT Rockstars trophy!
Let’s do this, Year 3!
Thank you for your continued support at home.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Roney.
