Letting Our Light Shine!
This week, we continued our superhero adventures, finding new ways to let our light shine and celebrating all the amazing things that make us who we are. Reception Class has been busy, focused and full of enthusiasm, and we’re so excited to share what we’ve been learning.
In Expressive Arts & Design, music time took us on an emotional journey. We listened to the gentle and thoughtful song ‘My Mum’s Amazing’, which encouraged us to think about our mums and how special they are. Later, the mood changed as we enjoyed a fun rap version of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. We loved singing along and added our own actions, turning it into a lively performance full of smiles and rhythm.
Our Physical Development sessions with Mr J and Mr, helped us build on last week’s gymnastic skills. We practiced moving in different ways, growing stronger and more confident each time we performed tucks and rolls. Just like superheroes, we are learning what our bodies can do and how to control our movements with care and confidence.
In Maths, we explored spatial language, describing where objects were from different viewpoints. We used words such as on, under, in front, behind and next to, and as the week progressed, we challenged ourselves further by focusing on left and right. The children showed fantastic listening skills and growing confidence when explaining their thinking.
During Personal, Social & Emotional Development and Wellbeing, we took time to reflect. We talked about things we think about a lot and things we try not to think about, and we practiced our calm breathing to help us feel relaxed and settled. These quiet moments helped us look after our minds as well as our bodies.
In Literacy, our work with Juniper Jupiter continued as we focused on Nut the sidekick and explored his character qualities. We created a word bank to describe what Nut is like and what he can do, before composing our own sentences about him. We also made a story map to support our oracy skills and help us retell the story in our own words. We have been working hard to remember to use capital letters at the start of our sentences, leave finger spaces between words, form our letters neatly, add full stops at the end and read our sentences back to check they make sense. The children are becoming increasingly confident and enthusiastic writers.
In Understanding the World, Forest School with Mr Hadfield was a magical experience. We worked together to build a cosy home for minibeasts using logs, fern fronds, tubes and leaves, and we hope our tiny visitors enjoy their new shelter. We ended the session by toasting marshmallows, listening to the birds sing and enjoying the sunshine, making it a perfect morning outdoors.
In RE, we continued our Questful Journey to explore the question “What is prayer?” We listened to the story of Jonah and the Whale from the Bob Hartman Storyteller Bible and talked about how prayer helped Jonah in his life. The children reflected on what they might like to pray for and wrote their own prayers on whale-shaped paper, which we added to our RE floor book.
This has truly been a wonderful week of learning, discovering and letting our light shine in everything we do.
Have a restful weekend, and we’ll see you on Monday
