Gingerbread Adventures and Winter Wonders!

This week in preschool has been filled with celebrations, storytelling, and icy outdoor explorations. From learning about children’s rights to diving into a much-loved traditional tale, the children have been curious, thoughtful, and full of excitement throughout the week.

On Friday, we marked World Children’s Day, taking time to talk about how fortunate we are to have Children’s Rights that help keep us safe, happy, and cared for. We explored some of these important rights together — the right to go to school, the right to food, clothing, and a safe place to live, and the right to play and rest.
The children shared their own ideas about what makes them feel safe and happy, and created a lovely picture showing children together, celebrating friendship and community.

This week also brought the start of our new traditional tale: The Gingerbread Man. The children were delighted to hear it begin with the familiar phrase “Once upon a time…”.
Our provision has been full of gingerbread fun — from gingerbread-scented playdough to decorating our own gingerbread men with care and creativity.
In the small world area, the children loved retelling the story with the characters, excitedly repeating the phrase “Run, run, as fast as you can!” as they brought the tale to life.

In maths, we focused on length, exploring the difference between tall and long. The children especially enjoyed choosing the longest worms to feed the bird — a joyful mix of maths and imaginative play.

This linked beautifully with our HeartSmart activity, where we made different kinds of bird feeders to help look after the birds during the cold, icy weather.
The children showed such care and empathy throughout this activity.

Outdoors, the week was filled with awe and wonder as the frost and ice transformed our play space. The children explored the textures and patterns in the ice, feeling the cold, watching it sparkle, and observing how it slowly melted in the winter sunshine. Their excitement and curiosity made each chilly moment magical.
It has been a wonderful week of learning, kindness, and seasonal discovery. We can’t wait to continue our winter adventures together next week!
