This week in preschool we have been exploring Summer!
Although our summer theme has been made a little tricky by the stormy weather, we have still enjoyed learning about the changing season. During a summer walk on Monday, the children used their observation skills to spot signs of summer in our local environment. We noticed long grass, bright red poppies, daisies growing, our shadows in the sunshine, birds singing in the trees, and the farmer's barley turning golden in the fields. These experiences supported both Communication and Language and Understanding the World, as the children shared their ideas and talked about the changes they could see around them.
Our rhyme of the week was "I Hear Thunder", which sparked lots of conversations about weather and the different sounds we hear during a storm. The children enjoyed joining in with the actions and using expressive movement and language to describe thunder, rain, and wind.
In our role play area we have enjoyed our ice cream shop, with the children taking turns to buy and serve many different types or ice cream treats. We have also enjoyed making gloop in the water tray and carefully threading beads onto thin straws, these activities have been fun and supported our fine motor skills.
In Maths, we explored the concepts of near and far away. Using binoculars, the children discovered how objects can appear closer or further away. We were amazed to see that a tree in the distance looked smaller than Helen, but when we walked closer, it was actually much taller! This practical activity helped the children develop their understanding of space, distance, and comparison.
During our Heartsmart (PSED) session, we talked about how amazing our bodies are and all the wonderful things they can do. We thought about how we use our hands for writing, clapping, building, and giving high fives, and how our feet help us walk, run, balance, and kick a football. We also discussed making good choices with our bodies by using kind hands and feet. Boris says "Our bodies are amazing"
On Friday, we explored Expressive Arts and Design through music and movement. The children listened to a variety of music, including The William Tell Overture, whale music, and instrumental pop. They responded by moving their bodies in different ways and then creating wonderful marks on paper to represent how the music made them feel. It was fantastic to see how they changed their mark making to match the different music.
It has been another week full of exploration, creativity, and discovery.
Next week, we are hoping for a little more summer sunshine! We will be exploring 2D shapes in Maths and harvesting our potatoes to see how many we have grown.
