This Week in Preschool we have had a wonderfully festive week in preschool, filled with creativity, celebrations, and lots of joyful learning.

Celebrating St Andrew’s Day
On Monday we marked St Andrew’s Day with a range of creative activities. The children decorated Scottish flags, made their own
tartan patterns using strips of patterned paper, and explored a map of the British Isles to see where we live and where Scotland is. This supported our Understanding the World learning as we talked about different places and cultures.

Nativity Songs and Seasonal Stories
Our Christmas Nativity songs have taken centre stage this week. The children have been singing beautifully and showing such enthusiasm during rehearsals. Alongside this, we’ve enjoyed a selection of Christmas stories, with The Story of Christmas—a retelling of the Nativity—as our featured book. These stories encouraged lovely discussions about kindness, giving, and the meaning of Christmas, supporting both Communication and Language and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

Maths: Building and Problem-Solving
In maths, the children were challenged to build a wall for Humpty Dumpty, thinking carefully about how to make it both long and tall. This encouraged problem solving, spatial awareness, and early mathematical reasoning. Outdoors, we practised throwing balls into hoops and targets, helping to strengthen gross motor skills and shoulder stability.

Fine Motor Fun
Indoors, the children enjoyed threading beads to decorate our Christmas tree and exploring festive playdough. These activities supported fine motor development, hand strength, and early mark making skills.

Nativity Performance
The children have been working so hard on their acting and singing for our Nativity performance. We’ll continue recording next week so that everyone has the chance to take part.

Letters to Santa
Our Christmas post box has been a huge hit! The children have been drawing pictures, writing lists, and making cards to post to
Santa—remembering to add their stamp. This has been a lovely way to encourage early writing, mark making, and purposeful communication.

Name Writing
We’ve also begun practising writing our names, a skill the children have proudly used when creating their Christmas cards. They’ve also been working on some very special festive surprises for their families… but those remain top secret for now!

Looking Ahead
Next week, we’ll be exploring the story Stick Man, learning a new festive rhyme—Five Mince Pies in the Baker’s Shop—and (fingers crossed!) finishing our Nativity filming.

It’s been a week full of creativity, excitement, and holiday cheer. Do ask your child about their favourite activity—whether it was writing to Santa or rehearsing for the Nativity.
