This Week in Preschool we've had a lovely week welcoming everyone back after the half-term break. The children quickly settled back into routine, and we've continued with our theme My planet and me.
This week, we were very excited to welcome five little caterpillars into preschool! The children have been fascinated by watching them wriggle and grow--we can't wait to see how they change over the coming weeks.
In Literacy, our story of the week was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We revisited the sounds m, a, s, d, and t to reinforce our early phonics knowledge.
For Communication and Language, our rhyme of the week was about a tiny caterpillar, which the children enjoyed learning with actions. We also spent circle time sharing our half-term news and looking at some of the lovely photos and videos shared on Seesaw.
In Maths, we created beautiful repeating pattern caterpillar pictures by printing with wooden blocks and paint. We also explored the days of the week, learning their rhythm and sequence just like in our story.
Our PSED (Heartsmart) session focused on perseverance. We took on Boris's tricky nut and bolt challenge--some of us found it difficult, but we kept going, remembering that Boris says "keep trying ! you can do it"
As part of Understanding the World, we learned about the butterfly life cycle. The children practiced their scissor skills to cut and sequence the stages: egg, caterpillar, cocoon, and butterfly. They showed great care and focus.
We also went on an exciting 'minibeast hunt' in Reception garden, we found, slugs, woodlice, bees and ants!
In Physical Development, we strengthened our fine motor skills by threading bead caterpillars and twisting the nuts and bolts.
Outdoors we embraced both sunshine and showers. The mud kitchen has remained a firm favourite, and we've been building with sticks and balls--measuring and comparing how long and tall we could make our constructions.
In Expressive Arts and Design, we explored a range of musical instruments including triangles, a ukulele, and a glockenspiel. The children listened carefully and experimented with the different sounds.
We also had a special visit on Thursday from Mrs Ward, who led a lovely story time session as part of our transition activities. The children were excited to meet her and engage with her as they prepare for their next steps.
Looking Ahead to Next Week:
Next week, we'll begin exploring the new season--summer--and observe the changes in our environment. We'll also continue to build our independence and resilience through new Boris challenges designed to help us grow in confidence and perseverance.
