Autumn Colours, Curious Noses, and Creative Minds
This week in preschool has been a sensory celebration! From colour blending to sniffing herbs and spices, the children have been immersed in playful learning that sparked wonder and delight. Our story of the week, Wow! Said the Owl, set the tone beautifully--encouraging us to notice the vibrant world around us and explore with curious eyes.
Colour was everywhere! Indoors and out, the children sorted a variety of objects by colour, using large hoops to collect toys and treasures. They were especially captivated by our colour mixing activities--watching in amazement as reds, blues, and yellows swirled together to create new shades. It was a joyful way to explore creativity and cause-and-effect, with plenty of "wow!" moments along the way.
In maths, we focused on sorting by one and two properties. The children carefully grouped items by colour, shape, and size, showing growing confidence in noticing similarities and differences. These sorting activities encouraged thoughtful conversations and lots of collaborative problem-solving.
Our rhyme of the week, Our Senses, tied in perfectly with our "All About Me" topic. We explored our sense of smell with real-life scents--ginger, mint, coffee, and orange. The children were fascinated by the different aromas, eagerly guessing and sharing their favourites. On Thursday, we practised hand washing, making lots of bubbly foam with soap and learning how to wash away dirt and germs. It was a lovely blend of self-care and science!
Thursday also brought a magical Autumn walk. We looked for signs of the changing season--spotting apples in the trees, leaves turning colour, and even watching a leaf fall gently to the ground. The children were full of wonder, noticing the small details and sharing their observations with excitement.
In our Heartsmart PSED session, we explored feelings through playdough. The children created Boris's face, giving him different expressions and talking about how he might be feeling. It was a gentle, creative way to build emotional awareness and empathy.
Outdoors, we built an animal train, played with balls and cars, zoomed around on wheels, and enjoyed plenty of active play.
Indoors, we continued to explore through sorting, painting, and building--each activity offering opportunities for imagination, collaboration, and growth.
As we wrap up this colourful and curious week, we're excited for what's ahead. Next week, we'll be diving into our sense of hearing, we will enjoy the story Polar bear, Polar bear, what do you hear? And begin looking at different shapes through puzzles crafts and building.
