A very busy and productive week in Year 6 with many subjects covered. You are working so hard and I think you are all superstars.
In Maths this week we have needed our resilience and patience as we continued to work with fractions. We have completed adding and subtracting fractions and we have now moved on to multiplying fractions by whole numbers. We have used stem sentences to remind ourselves about the parts of a fraction that change and then used small steps to show our chosen methods. It is lovely to see the achievements on faces as they master each concept. I am so impressed Year 6.
In English this week we have continued our unit based on the book Story Like the Wind by Gill Lewis. We have read the whole story now and chosen the characters and setting we are going to base our own piece of writing on. We have written a short piece using illustrations and chosen vocabulary. Next week we will begin to plan and write out longer pieces.
We have begun a new unit of spellings focusing on words ending in the letter y and what happens when we add a suffix to them.
We have used most of our book club sessions this week to plan and practise our Class Worship. We have also visited the Book Fair and enjoyed some independent reading time too.
We continued our wellbeing this week as we thought about our favourite times in the year. We shared our thoughts and enjoyed adding to our journals whilst listening to calming music.
Our afternoons have been just as busy as our morning sessions. We have enjoyed many different lessons.
In Computing this week, we used our unplugged session to summarise our unit on understanding how the internet works.
We enjoyed another science lesson on light. We have used mirrors to think about light travelling in straight lines as we investigated angles of reflection. We were given a piece of paper, a mirror and a torch to prove that light travels in straight lines and after watching a short video were left to consider how to prove our statement. We realised that a small slit in a piece of paper would help us to direct our beam which helped us to create reflected beams. Next week we will measure our angles.
In RE this week, we learnt about the meaning of the advent wreath. We watched a video to think about what each candle represents and symbolises. We are now in the process of making our own to embed our learning. They are beginning to take shape nicely.
In DT this week we have chosen the resources we need to build our playgrounds and recorded them ready to begin next week. We were inspired by some wonderful pictures of structures made from lollipop sticks which gave us some super ideas.
In our Geography unit continued this week we considered how our planet has changed during the years 2009 to 2019. We watched an interesting David Attenborough video sharing information on the warming of our planet. We used this information to become note takers and presented our findings.
We have taken part in two PE lessons. Thank you to Mrs Whittingham and Coach Gabriel from Kick.
In our Courageous Advocacy lesson this week we worked as a group to find as many words as possible to describe a good leader. We thought back to our cup experiment to help. We then had to rate our top 5. The findings were interesting.
In music this week, we looked at a wartime song called – Side by Side. We thought this song was portraying the message of sticking together during the war. We annotated the lyrics in our music books and thought about the emotions, actions and how the phrase "singing a song" was mentioned throughout the song.
We have also enjoyed spending time with our buddies. We joined them twice this week. Once on our snowy day and again on Friday just before we presented our Class worship to you.
Thank you for joining our Class Worship this week. We enjoyed sharing our RE lessons with you and loved singing our song Climb. I was a very proud teacher standing at the back of the hall watching everyone delivering their words so clearly and their singing with passion.
We are looking forward to our school educational visit next week as we take our WW2 learning into a living history day at Tatton Park.
Have a great weekend.
Your teacher.
