We are flying in Year 6. Another amazing week.

In Maths this week we have worked hard using number lines to help us to place large numbers accurately. We have used our steps to success by finding mid, quarter and three-quarter points. We have then used known facts to help us. We have also used number lines to round successfully. We will continue to develop our knowledge next week as we bring this unit on Place Value to an end. Homework will be set on maths.co.uk which reflects our learning.

In English this week we have recapped our understanding of fronted adverbials and contractions. We have enjoyed role playing different characters and then using freeze frames to discuss how our characters feel. We have used this language to write a short diary piece. We have also chosen our story page to focus our big write. We have planned our first paragraph and will go on to write it next week. Well done Year 6 you have worked hard.

We have begun to read with an adult in Book Club this week. I have chatted to all my children this week about keeping up with their home reading as this supports their written work and broadens vocabulary. Please could you read with your child at least three times a week to support this?

Our spelling focus this week has begun with suffixes. We have looked at different word endings and considered if they change the root of each word. We have talked about vowels and the way a suffix uses them.

In RE this week, we considered what we would need on our journey of life? Together as a class we packed an imaginary suitcase. We discussed what items are really needed or just things that we would like. We thought about the things our lives needed to be full and flourishing. Some thought-provoking suggestions were discussed. We then went on to consider the things a Christian would need on their life journey. Bishop Phillip helped us to decide.

In DT this week we have used our chosen fabric and templates to cut out our waistcoat front and back pieces. We used chalk to create our outlines. After cutting our pieces, we ensured we had the correct sides before pegging them together. We are now ready to begin sewing next week.

In History this week we have used some of our computing time to look through powerful photos of the Blitz using the Imperial War Museum site. We considered what surprised us and discussed this as a team. We will continue with our research next week.

In Science, our new unit has ignited our understanding of electrical circuits, cells, and conductors as well as providing us with lots of opportunities to take part in practical work. We used challenge cards to develop our scientific thinking to construct and check circuits. We then explored the voltage of a single cell and a bulb before answering the related questions.

In our Music lesson with Miss Holland this week, we continued to learn our WW2 songs ready for our VE Theme Day later in the term. We also discussed the writer's word choices and how emotive the songs were. We learnt some new words like – tuppence, napper and dapper!

We have taken part in PE this week with both Coach Beth and Thrive.

Our French learning has guided us to countries around the world where French is spoken as the main language. Firstly, we identified which countries were masculine and feminine. We then looked at which preposition was needed to help us create sentences.

We have enjoyed our PSHE lesson this week by thinking about different poses and what they show about a person. Were they powerful or powerless poses? We ended our lesson using our art wooden mannequin to create our own poses.

Some of our mornings this week have been dedicated to our Reception buddies. We have rehearsed our parts for their New Starters Service which took place in school this afternoon. You have been super role models and led their New Starters Worship beautifully with clearly spoken passages and jubilant singing. Thank you.

New homework has been set. What busy times we have had in Year 6 this week. You have worked so hard and I am very proud of you all. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. See you all on Monday.

Your teacher,
Mrs B.
