Another brilliant week Year 6. Your determination to do your best is just amazing to see and I am very proud of you.
This week has been Anti-Bullying Week and in Year 6 we have thought about this in many different ways. The key discussion this year is on choosing respect. We have discussed the term anti bullying and what this means to us. We have taken part in a worship celebrating difference and being inspired by Bart Gee who talked to us about the challenges he experiences in his life and how he always views them as possibilities. We have also discussed the word conflict and thought about different scenarios and how to show respect to each other in the way we react. We have even entered a Healthy Minds Logo competition too. Great work Year 6.
We enjoyed celebrating Children in Need today. We came together to parade around the daily mile track and enjoyed wearing our bright colours.
In our Maths lessons this week we have shared our lesson time competing in TT Rock Stars Battle England and we have also continued to work with fractions. We have practised turning mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice-versa. We have used this knowledge to then add and subtract mixed numbered fractions. Our concentration has focused our learning on the methods needed to be successful and we will continue on our fraction journey next week.
We battled hard this week against over 4,400 schools across the country as our TT Rock Stars skills came in very handy. Wybunbury Delves Primary School came in the amazing position of 411 and Year 6 were the top playing class. Year 6 you ended up in 1484 out of over 30,000 classes. AMAZING!
In English this week we have begun to analyse our focus text and think about the writing devices being used. We have searched for different word classes within the text and used some of them within our sentence accuracy. We have also written powerful setting descriptions.
During Book Club this week we have continued to investigate the Secret Annex of Anne Frank. We have used a diary entry to think about how Jewish people were being treated. We have also used some of our book club time to complete our anti bullying activities.
Our Wellbeing lesson this week was focused on our Healthy Minds Logo. I am so impressed with the quality of work. I know you will agree from the attached photos.
We have enjoyed many different afternoon lessons. We have drawn our footprints of our playground sculptures in DT and considered three pieces of equipment to construct. We can't wait to get going creating them.
Our new unit in geography began this week as we thought about the question: are we damaging our world? We considered some new vocabulary and then went on to watch a short David Attenborough programme from 2009. We will compare our thoughts next week as we watch another short programme, this time dated ten years later.
We have taken part in two PE lessons.
In music this week, we continued our war songs learning. We watched a clip of 'In the mood' by Glenn Miller and learnt some facts about him as a person. We then learnt about Dame Vera Lynn. We know that her positive lyrics brought hope among people who were suffering during blackouts, rationing and the bombing of The Blitz. To end our lesson, we read a verse from a song called 'Side by Side' by Nick Lucas. We discussed how the song title could mean being physically side by side, or being away from family, but still thinking of loved ones and having each other's backs.
We have also begun to learn about light in science and considered the question – does light travel in straight lines? Today we used mirrors to explore hidden messages within writing. We will continue to explore light next week.
We have begun a new RE unit this week. We are thinking about Advent and what this means to a Christian. We considered what preparations we may make as we head towards Christmas and we will continue to think about this time of year as we explore its meaning.
We enjoyed some amazing examples from our Bingo Boards in show and tell this week. We are a little behind with them, so please bear with us. We have also had some Bronze reading badges awarded and we will hand these out in our celebration worship on Monday. Well done Year 6. Great achievements to celebrate.
Have a wonderful weekend Year 6
