Welcome back to you all. You have settled straight back into your learning and completed a busy week. Well done Y6.

We began our week by tackling our morning arithmetic calculations. We have also worked with orders of operations, brackets, and mental strategies to efficiently calculate answers quickly and accurately. We have now completed our final place value and four operations assessment ready to move onto our next unit which is fractions. We have also completed an arithmetic paper using our mental strategies. Times tables knowledge is essential as we move onto our fractions unit and this needs to be on the tip of our tongues. Remember five minutes practise on TT Rock Stars each night will support your learning.

In English this week we have begun a new Talk for Writing unit. We began by completing a cold write based on a warning story. We have now learnt the first four paragraphs of my model warning story and added actions to emphasis different parts. We have investigated vocabulary and thought about word definitions. We have also completed a short burst write using description and we have learnt how to punctuate speech accurately. We will continue with this area next week. Brilliant work Y6.

We have continued in Book club this week with our read aloud books and concentrated on developing our comprehension skills. We have enjoyed newspapers, magazines and the first chapter of a new book. We have also presented our first Bronze Y6 reading challenge badge to Ethan. Well done to you Ethan.

Our Spelling lessons this week have continued to focus on adding suffixes to words. We have tested each other whilst playing different games and thought about our rules.

In Computing this week, we began with an unplugged session focusing on a scrambled message interrupted by the code cracking team (us). We worked together deciphering coded messages and finally cracked it just in time to help the Allies. We will continue with this code cracking unit next week.

I just want to say how amazing our Blitz tunnel books look now they have been displayed in our classroom. They add a wow factor and I know how proud my children and I am of them. I'm sure you will agree from the photos that they are just brilliant.

We have completed our drugs awareness week by completing two different lessons. We began by thinking about common drugs in our country. We then focused on the illegal drug Cannabis before moving on to learn about Volatile Substance Abuse.

We have completed our hot task in science this week assessing our knowledge on Light. We have now completed this unit. We began our new unit on electricity by playing a card game to timeline different electrical inventions. Some items were definitely a shock!

Our final History lesson focused on Operation Pied Piper – the evacuation project run by Mr Anderson. We looked at different sources from different perspectives and discussed answers to different questions. We also watched a short video taking us on an evacuation journey. We have completed our assessment to answer the question – What was it like to be a child during the Blitz? We have shared different bingo board items and even had the chance to look at some real medals.

We began our Geography unit this week thinking about the question – What are the key features of the UK? We used different maps to focus on the UK, and its key human and physical features.

We have now completed our RE assessment in readiness of a new unit. Our pieces of artwork will now be displayed for us all to enjoy.

Our My Happy Minds focus this week has been on cortisol levels and how we can have an impact upon them.

We have taken part in two PE sessions this week. The details are posted separately. We are now beginning to prepare for our Theme Day as we learn to dance in the style of the 1940's.

In Music this week we are also thinking about our Theme Day as we began to listen and to learn WW2 songs. We discussed how imortant music would have been to people in those difficult times. We thought about different questions too.

We ended our week spending time with a favourite buddies as we enjoyed the daily mile track together.

New homework has been set. This includes: Spag.com online, TT Rock Stars and regular reading aloud with an adult.

Another amazing week of learning Y6. You are all stars and are dedicated role models. I am proud of you all.

Have a wonderful weekend
Your teacher.
Mrs B.
