I cannot believe how much we have got through this week in Year 6. You have worked so hard and your dedication to my tasks is impressive. Well done to you all.
This week in Maths we have begun by using our fluency skills to solve different calculations. We have discussed our strategies and shared our methods. In our lessons we continued to investigate place value. We have used our place value charts to partition numbers up to 10,000,000 in both standard and non-standard ways and we have compared and ordered numbers by using the inequality signs to show our knowledge. We ended our week battling each other on TT Rock Stars and completing our first arithmetic paper. Great job Year 6.
In English this week we have worked hard to create different sentences of accuracy. Our focus has been on formal and informal language and punctuating speech. We have written short descriptive pieces and thought about the feelings of our main character as she sees her town being invaded by German soldiers. Editing has also been a focus in class this week. Keep it up Year 6. I am impressed.
During Book Club this week we have focused on a DK history book. We have used pages from this book to learn new vocabulary and facts, and to understand the layout of non-fiction text. We have also spent time enjoying our new class text – Goodnight Mr. Tom.
Our History lesson this week focused our attention on the word invasion. We listened to a reading from Neville Chamberlain announcing the beginning of WW2 and thought about the feelings of the nation. We worked in pairs with a map of Europe in 1939, and 3 different coloured pieces of modelling dough. We listened carefully as I read the Dough War Walkthrough. We split our playdough into three pieces, one for Germany, one for the Soviet Union and one for Italy. Our invasion stopped on the 10th July 1940. As the invasion took place, children recorded any questions they wanted to ask. We will look at these at the beginning of our next lesson.
As scientists, we revisited our prior knowledge of electricity, marking the beginning of our new unit. In small teams, we explored a timeline of electrical inventions and uncovered several surprising facts.
We began our new computing unit by thinking about internet addresses. We explored what is necessary for effective communication and the importance of agreed protocols. We applied our understanding to IP addresses and the rules (protocols) that computers have for communicating with one another. We will now learn about Domain Name Servers (DNS) and how to translate web addresses into IP addresses.
Our RE lesson challenged us to create a 'map' of our own life journey so far. We included key events, places, and people and any religious ceremonies or rites of passage (birth rites, coming of age ceremonies, weddings, funerals) in these journeys. We then considered what you need on your journey of life?
We have also taken part in PSHE considering what makes us special. We watched instruments being made from recyclable materials and thought about what they symbolise. We have also enjoyed our Wellbeing sessions thinking about our favourite colours.
PE with Coach Beth has taken place this week. Next week, we will have two PE sessions, one on Monday and one on Tuesday.
In our Music lesson this week we thought about WW2 songs and what effect they had on their listener.
We enjoyed our DT lesson this week as we considered our waistcoat designs and chose our fabric. We have cut out our templates and we are now ready to use them next week. We are excited to get going with the making stage!
Our French learning journey took us on an adventure to the U.K. and beyond. We practised saying "Je m'appelle..." and "J'habite en/au..." before writing the names of the capital cities of the countries in the U.K. We then learned about countries around the world where French is spoken as an official language.
We have been introduced to our new Courageous Advocacy project which is The Archbishop's Young Leader's Award. We met Archie a character who will take us on this journey. We thought about what makes a good leader and how we can aim to be leaders ourselves. We will continue with our project next week.
We loved spending time with our buddies today and we will join them next week as we welcome them into our Wybunbury family and lead their New Starters service in school.
Year 6 homework this week has been set. Maths.co.uk homework consolidates our place value learning so far. Please enjoy reading to an adult and playing on TT Rock Stars. Remember, you are aiming to change the colour of your heatmaps.
Well, what a busy and productive week we have had. Have a wonderful weekend Year 6, you deserve it.
Your teacher.
