Busy times this week in Y6. You have worked so hard and I am very proud of you all. You have been super role models for our Reception children and led their New Starters Worship beautifully with clear spoken passages and jubilant singing.

In Maths this week we completed our Place Value unit with a discussion and a short assessment. We then began a new unit, the four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We shared top tips on solving addition and subtraction calculations and recapped both formal and mental methods. We will continue to develop our knowledge next week. We have also completed our second arithmetic paper which will help us to set starter questions to tackle next week.

In English this week we have worked hard to create a shared piece of writing based on the first night of the Blitz. We have collated our ideas and tweaked them to improve. We have then used our targets to up level our writing. Editing has also been a focus in class this week. We will do our final shared write and edit next week and then have a go at a hot write. Keep it up Y6. I am impressed.

We have revisited our spelling pattern and used our knowledge on suffixes to complete different activities. Four in a row is a favourite and the ful suffix is one we are keeping an eye on.

We have been introduced to a new initiative in class this week called My Happy Minds. This science-backed programme aims to help to prepare today's children for tomorrow's world by building resilient, balanced and happy minds. We received new journals and spent some time understanding the programme before setting ourselves a target to work on throughout this term.

Some of our mornings this week have been dedicated to our buddies. We have rehearsed our parts in their New Starters Service which took place in church this afternoon. We joined together to walk to church and thoroughly enjoyed our first buddy time. Well done, Reception. You were all stars.

Our RE lesson followed on from last week as we continued to explore our big question – How do different Christians describe God? We challenged each other to come up with as many names known for Jesus and God and then we created different wordle patterns to embed our learning.

Our second History lesson focused our attention on the word invasion. We worked in pairs, and with a map of Europe in 1939, and 3 different coloured pieces of modelling dough. We listened carefully as I read the Dough War Walkthrough. We split our playdough into three pieces, one for Germany, one for the Soviet Union and one for Italy. Our invasion stopped on the 10thJuly 1940. As the invasion took place, children recorded any questions they wanted to ask. We will look at these at the beginning of our next lesson.

We have now decided on our chosen area of WW2 to begin our own research project. We will continue to use my QR codes to access suitable content as we present our findings. We have also enjoyed a coding session in our computing time.

In Science this week, we learnt about the incident ray and reflected ray and how the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incident. We then drew scientific drawings to match our findings. Next week we will use this knowledge to make our own periscopes out of our cereal boxes. Could your child please bring in a medium sized cereal box in readiness for their lesson on Wednesday?

This week in Music, we played open strings on our ukuleles. We played to a fun song entitled- My Dog Has Fleas! We also learnt how to play our first chord – chord C. Feeling confident, we played chord C to a funky rendition of Row, Row, Row Your Boat.

We have taken part in PE this week with Mrs Jenkins – please look out for her post.

Our Y6 roles were announced to us this week by Mrs Chesters. We will have a special ceremony next week to receive our badges. We will meet with our adults to find out all about our responsibilities too.

New homework has been set. This includes: maths.co.uk, TT Rock Stars and regular reading aloud with an adult. Please could you encourage your child to play on TT Rock Stars as often as possible. Times table knowledge on the tip of their tongues is of great help as we move through the Year 6 maths curriculum. Much of my curriculum depends upon sharp knowledge of these facts.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. See you on Monday.

Your teacher,

Mrs B.
