We have covered so many areas in our learning this week and I am proud of each and every one of you. Year 6 you are flying. Each day you work your way through our morning maths starters and mark them all before 9am, truly amazing!
This week in Maths we have continued to master the four operations. We have used estimation to check our addition and subtraction answers and we have also used written methods to be more accurate. We have completed an end of place value assessment and finished our week on TT Rock Stars. Please could you encourage your child to keep up to date with their homework as the tasks give me a further understanding of their knowledge. We have also used some of our maths timings to run through our Harvest Celebration Service. Well done Year 6.
We have begun a new unit in our English lessons. We are continuing to use our Rose Blanche text to help us to write a formal speech noting her acts of bravery. We will continue with this unit next week. We have also had two SpaG focussed lessons this week – one on apostrophes and the other on modal verbs.
During Book Club this week we have continued to read with an adult. I am receiving lots of book reviews into my inbox which is brilliant. We are logging the points towards first reading badges and I'm sure we will be presenting more in our Year 6 celebration worship.
Our Spelling focus is still on suffixes that begin with a vowel. We have used words ending in e to understand how this letter is dropped before adding a vowel suffix. We will continue with our learning next week.
As scientists, we were set a challenge to create a working circuit without using a real battery. Our minds turned to a successful world record attempt that demonstrated how a set of lemons could act as a battery. Inspired by this idea, we took on the challenge and investigated: What would happen to the lamp if we increased or decreased the number of fruit batteries in the circuit? We showed great resilience, as often in Science investigations don't always go to plan. Although our circuits weren't able to light the bulb, we used our science knowledge brilliantly.
As historians this week, we returned to the Imperial War Museum website to find out all about shelters and which ones were used and why. We then went on to listen out for the air raid siren and quickly headed into ones we had made ourselves. We thought about who would go into the shelter first and what we might take in with us. Once the all clear siren was heard, we made our way out safely. After creating a class word bank, we wrote a short diary entry to reflect on our experiences. I have loved reading your responses.
In RE this week, we visited the Open Doors website to learn all about the persecution of Christians. We looked at the world watch list and then went on to read some stories before reflecting on our findings.
In Computing this week, we used our time to log into google docs as a class. We discussed using this space as a group workspace and will continue with this lesson next week.
In Music this week, we continued to brush up on our dance moves and we revisited our WW2 war songs.
In DT this week, we continued to work on our waistcoats. We are now thinking about our designs and what needs adding to develop our garment further. Buttons, pockets, lettering and shapes are all being considered. Year 6 they look amazing.
During our Archbishop Young Leaders Award lesson this week, we considered the term good leader and what a good leader would be like. We created our own picture of a good leader and we are now ready to complete our first task.
Today in French, we asked: "Combien y a-t-il de continents?" We began by listing them in English, then learnt the French name for each one. We discovered that all continents are feminine, so we needed to use the preposition en when describing which countries are in which continent. We worked in partners to answer the question: "Which continent are they in?" Using atlases and online translators, we worked through the countries to translate them into French.
We have taken part in PE this week with Coach Beth and Thrive.
We ended our week spending time with our favourite buddies. As it was raining today, we decided to share books by reading stories. Have a great weekend Reception and I hope you have a wonderful weekend too Year 6. See you all on Monday.
Your teacher.
