What a brilliant week we've had in Year 5! From practising our measuring and decimal skills in Maths to starting our personal recounts in English, you have shown fantastic focus and effort. We continued to explore Women of the Old Testament in RE, built straw truss bridges in DT, and began learning about human development in Science. In French, we enjoyed learning the names of clothes, while a cricket session with Crewe Vagrants made PE extra fun. We also loved our transition morning with Mrs Burns and celebrated completing our Natural England Environmental Champion Award with friends and family. Well done, Year 5!

In Maths, we continued learning about units of measure in maths, and the focus of our lessons has been converting between g and kg, ml and l and mm to m. For us to complete the work successfully, we needed to brush up on our skills of multiplying and dividing by 1000. Once we had refreshed our knowledge, our confidence grew and we were able to answer word problems too. Well done, team!

In English this week, we started an exciting new unit where we will be writing a personal recount of our Natural England Environmental Champion Award experience. We began by looking at an example of a good recount. We identified it' structure and language features, and we discussed what makes them effective. We then created word banks filled with technical vocabulary from our environmental sessions to help us when we start writing.

It was time for the final lesson of our unit on 'Women of the Old Testament'. We continued our journey through the Old Testament, specifically exploring the story of Ruth and Naomi. Through this tale, we discussed the values of loyalty and friendship, highlighting the significant role Ruth plays in God's overarching narrative. Your insightful reflections and engagement with the lesson have been truly remarkable.

For our DT lesson, we started a super exciting project: building truss bridges out of straws! We learned that we needed to work carefully to avoid damaging the straws while building. We watched a helpful video to guide us through each step and then got to work using straw and masking tape to create our bridges. Once finished, we tested our bridges by placing them across two piles of books and carefully adding weight to see how strong they were. We made predictions about how much weight they could hold.

This week in Science, we moved onto a new unit. This is a biology unit, and in this lesson we are learning all about humans. So far, we have learnt about the milestones of babies and children. It was very interesting learning what a baby and child learn to do at each stage!

In French this week, we continued with our "Going Shopping" unit. We started by recapping the names of colours to refresh our memories. Then, we learned the names of some clothes, including "un pantalon" (trousers), "un t-shirt" (t-shirt), "une robe" (dress), and "un chapeau" (hat). You enjoyed practising saying these new words and using the colours to describe different clothes in French. Fantastique, Year 5!

In PE, we enjoyed a special visit from the Crewe Vagrants. They came in to teach us all about cricket. We took part in four activities that allowed us to practice our batting, fielding and bowling skills. You all worked hard and were a fantastic at listening to and following instructions.

We also enjoyed our transition morning this week. You were a little nervous before going up to see Mrs Burns, but those nerves soon went. You had a great morning finding out all about Year 6 and getting to know Mrs Burns.

Finally, this week we celebrated completing our Natural England Environmental Champion Award. We celebrated by sharing all the wonderful things we have done with friends and family. We explained that we went to our local moss and shared an array of pictures to show case what we had done. You all spoke clearly, and I am very proud of you all.

Hope you're having a fantastic weekend,

Miss Pennance
