Happy Friday, Year 5!

It's been an exciting first week back, and we've certainly been busy. This week has been First Aid Week, and we've learned some really important skills. The most crucial thing? Keeping yourself safe!

We started by learning how to call 999 or 112 and discussed the types of questions we might be asked. Then, we explored the difference between minor and severe bleeding. We all agreed that minor bleeds--like small cuts and grazes--are something we've all experienced. We practiced cleaning the wound, putting on gloves, and applying a sterile dressing. Then we moved on to severe bleeding, where we learned that deeper cuts mean more blood. In this case, we still wear gloves, clean the wound, apply pressure, and use a bandage. We even had a go at bandaging--great teamwork, everyone!

When we weren't busy being first aiders, we were diving into our usual lessons.

In maths, we've been getting to grips with decimals. Using our place value and fractions knowledge, we explored thousandths--and seeing a thousandths grid really helped us understand just how tiny they are compared to tenths and hundredths.

In spelling, we've been figuring out when to use 'ent' at the end of words. It's been brilliant to see so many of you applying the rules in your writing--keep at it, and you'll have it mastered in no time.

In English, we worked on planning and finishing our formal letters, making sure to include lots of emotive language. I've been so impressed with how you've taken on feedback and applied it to your writing--brilliant effort.

In PE, we started our netball unit. We practiced chest passes, focusing on keeping our hands in a W shape and pushing the ball forward with control. Then, we put our skills to the test in a passing game, where we had to communicate, move into space quickly, and keep an eye on our teammates and opponents. Later in the week, we kicked off our invasion games unit, working on quick movements, dodging, and changing direction. Some of you were very tricky to catch--great work!

In music, we continued practicing Mamma Mia on the recorder, making sure to keep in time with the rhythm, which is trickier than it sounds. We also reflected on our recorder unit with a self-assessment and discussed our big question: How does music teach us about our community? Lots of thoughtful ideas were shared--well done!

In art, we delved deeper into typography and how it plays a role in maps. We studied some amazing examples, including work by Grayson Perry, Chris Kenny, and even the Marauder's Map from Harry Potter. You all took fantastic visual notes--I can't wait to see how you incorporate these ideas into your own creative work.

In RE, we wrapped up our unit about Jesus with a discussion on the Kingdom of God. We explored the parable of the mustard seed and what it teaches us about growth and faith.

In computing, we built on our coding skills by exploring events and how they can be used in programming. It's amazing to see so many of you getting creative with your own game designs--I think we have some future game developers in the making.

It's been a fantastic first week back, and I'm so proud of you all for working so hard. Have a wonderful weekend, and I'll see you all on Monday!
