forest schoolforest schoolpshe fire service

It has been an exciting week! We enjoyed forest schools, learnt about many new and exciting things and we were visited by the local fire service.

Why did the fire service come to visit you ask? They came to teach us all about road safety. We learnt that there are different types of crossings for pedestrians. We recapped the importance of 'Stop, Look, Listen and Think'. You listened well and engaged fantastically. You were a credit to our school community. Thank you, Year 5.

In forest schools this week, we battled against the weather which was determined to get us wet. Despite the rain, we lived life in all its fullness and still enjoyed our session. In the session, we learnt about plant propagation; we took cuttings and have planted them. We're keeping our fingers crossed that they'll flourish under our care. We also took on the challenge of lighting fires in the rain – and what a challenge that was. Nonetheless, you persevered and succeeded!

In our other lessons, we have enjoyed Maths, English, Spelling, RE, Wellbeing, Heartsmart, French, PE and History.

In Maths, we have come to the end of our addition and subtraction unit this week after lots of hard work and resilience. As part of our final lessons, we learnt about problems with missing numbers (where we had to use the inverse) and comparison problems. We used stem sentences to help us with these questions, and they definitely did the trick. After completing our end of unit check, we did our first lesson of the multiplication and division unit which was all about multiples.

In English, we have been busy unpicking our example text – a Mission Log from a lunar expedition. Our unpicking of the text taught us about the language and structure we will need to use in our own writing. This includes things like subheadings, technical vocabulary and formal language. You have also done some fantastic writing that has allowed you to showcase these skills in your own work.

During our Spelling sessions, we delved deeper into the 'ible' spelling pattern, unravelling the concept that, in most cases, removing 'ible' from a word leaves an incomplete and nonsensical word. For example, in "horrible," removing 'ible' would leave the meaningless "horr." We learnt some new words as part of the process too!

In R.E this week, we have been looking at world faiths. Our main focus was Judaism. First, we jotted down everything we could remember about it. It was great to see how much you knew. Well done! We remembered that their holy text is called the Torah. As part of our lesson, we considered why the Torah is important to Jewish people. This sparked great discussed, and you had lots of excellent suggestions.

In PHSE, we explored the significance of sleep and discussed factors that influence the quality of our sleep. Our discussions linked to a Bible quote: 'In peace, I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety,' from Psalm 4:8. We also completed a reflection task as we have now wrapped up our first HeartSmart unit.

Today's lesson was shooting. After a warm-up of football tag, year 5 practised their shooting skills with some different games to work on shooting from different areas, with different feet and different parts of the foot. Defenders were then added to make it more challenging.Afterwards they had some 5 v 5 games to put their shooting skills into action.

This week, we jumped back into our history unit. First, we recapped what we have already learnt about the Victorians so far. Then we were introduced to the term 'Industrial Revolution'. We learnt what this was and we discussed some of the amazing inventions that were created by the Victorians during this time, and we considered the life changing impact they had. One of these inventions was the steam engine. We went onto learn about the history of the railways and created a timeline of these events. Finally, we learnt when the railways came to Crewe and add this to our timelines too.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend,

Miss Pennance
