Happy Friday, Year 5!
Before we jump into sharing what we've been up to, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the amazing donations we received today for our PTA class hamper. I know the PTA will be thrilled when they see it!
This week in our learning, we've been just as busy as usual. In Maths, we continued exploring the wonderful world of geometry. Our focus was on parallel and perpendicular lines -- we practised identifying them and even learnt how to draw them accurately.
In English, we've been planning and writing the beginnings of our survival narratives. At the start of the week, we imagined the exciting (and sometimes dangerous!) situations our characters would face. Then we got stuck into writing our opening paragraphs, describing the setting with care and detail. It was tricky not to leap straight into the action, but you showed fantastic restraint and have done a wonderful job so far. I can't wait to read what comes next!
Over in RE, we continued learning about St Paul. We thought about his purpose and read one of his letters to the Corinthians, where he described what love is -- and what it isn't. We reflected on what we might include in a letter to the church today, and all agreed that Paul's message of love is just as important now as it was then.
In Music, we continued our group work on beatboxing. We made sure we knew our beatboxing sounds and actions and worked on positioning to keep beatboxers out of sight, helping our scenes look just right.
In PE with Mrs Whittingham, we developed our badminton skills by focusing on the split-step stance and chasse movement. We played 1v1 touch play games to support and coach each other, then progressed to larger team games to practise our footwork and accuracy. With Coach Beth, we had a fantastic time preparing for next week's Sports Day by practising a variety of races -- you gave it your all!
Our Art lesson saw us return to our architecture unit -- and this week was especially exciting as we began building our dream homes! Some of you went big and bold, while others embraced the charm of a tiny house. You used the 'design and make' approach brilliantly, showing resilience and adaptability as you refined your ideas. I was so impressed with your creativity and determination. I can't wait to see your finished structures!
In Science, we explored the concept of solubility and began preparing for our investigations. We learned the importance of fair testing, carefully planning our experiments to change just one variable while keeping everything else -- such as the amount of solvent, temperature, and stirring method -- the same. We're looking forward to carrying out our tests next week!
In Geography, we continued our journey through the Amazon rainforest by focusing on the city of Manaus. We discovered that this fascinating city is located right in the heart of the rainforest. Working in teams, we carried out research to explore its human and physical features -- from rivers and vegetation to architecture and culture. We then created detailed information booklets to share what we'd learned.
Finally, in Computing, we built on our vector drawing skills. This week, we focused on using layers and the zoom tool to add more detail to our pictures. Your confidence and skills are growing with every session. Keep it up -- you're well on your way to becoming vector drawing pros!
Thank you for another fantastic week, Year 5. Your effort, enthusiasm, and kindness continue to shine through in everything you do. I'm so proud of how hard you're working and how brilliantly you're supporting one another.
Have a restful weekend -- you've earned it!
