This week was full of exciting activities including a TTRocks Battle, Anti-Bullying activities, special visitors and Children in Need.
For Anti-Bullying Week, the theme was Choose Respect. You learned what bullying is, how it affects others, and how choosing respect can make a big difference. We talked about what respect means – like treating others kindly and listening to each other – and acted out different scenarios to see what respect looks like in action. This helped us understand why respect is so important and how we can make a positive impact by using it every day.
On Tuesday, we were inspired by a special visitor – Bart Gee, who shared how he turned his challenges into opportunities. He came to see us as part of the 'Choose Respect' message. Born with Arthrogryposis, which affects his muscles and joints, doctors told Bart he might never walk or sit up on his own. But Bart didn't give up--he found ways to adapt and achieve his goals. His visit tied in perfectly with our Anti-Bullying Week message, showing us the power of perseverance and respect for ourselves and others. Bart's message was clear: "DIFFICULT = POSSIBLE," encouraging us to never give up and to keep trying, no matter what obstacles we face.
Next, we took part in the Healthy Young Minds competition, where you created logos reflecting themes of youth, health, wellness, and growth -building on the ideas of respect and perseverance that we've been discussing. This was a great chance for you to be creative while thinking about how we can support each other's well-being. The winning school will receive £500 to spend on mental health and wellness activities, and we're hoping that one of us will be the lucky winner!
Alongside our Anti-Bullying Week activities, you've also been hard at work in the England Rocks competition in TT Rockstars. Your efforts in answering as many questions as possible earned points for our school and showed incredible dedication. Thanks to your hard work, our school came in 411th place out of 4,493 schools, and our class placed 1,685th out of 30,188! This achievement highlights how perseverance and teamwork can lead to success, just like Bart taught us.
We wrapped up our study of multiplication and division in maths by learning how to divide by 10, 100, and 1000. We also explored how to multiply and divide by powers of 10, and now we're diving into fractions. This new topic is another chance for you to build problem-solving skills and grow in confidence with your learning.
As part of our English lessons, we've continued exploring The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. You've worked on vocabulary, written descriptive poems about the moors, and created character descriptions of Sherlock Holmes. It's been fantastic to see how you've applied your Year 5 skills, using great word choices and accurate punctuation.
In RE, we've been learning about the holy books of different world faiths. You thought about how you'd feel if you found one of these books and discussed why they're so important to people of faith. This ties in with our overall theme of respect – respecting other people's beliefs and cultures is key to building understanding and kindness.
In music this week, we began building on our previous ukulele learning. We recapped the parts of the ukulele. Reminding ourselves of the part names will increase our learning further. To warm-up, we practised holding our ukuleles and strumming to 'My Dog has Fleas.' We practised strumming with and without a pick. Some of us have decided using a pick is not for us, and that is absolutely fine. Us feeling comfortable is the most important thing.
PE this week included tag rugby and gymnastics. In tag rugby, you practiced the pop-pass and used it in a mini-game, working together as a team. In gymnastics, you learned about creating bridges and different types of rolls, showing how teamwork and perseverance help us reach our goals.
In Art, you continued working on your zines and explored the technique of monoprinting. It's been exciting to see how your creativity has been growing, just like the respect and care we show for our work and each other.
Finally, Science provided the chance to explore gravity, where you learned about the difference between weight and mass. Through our experiment with force meters, we discovered how force acts on objects.
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend, and I can't wait to see you on Monday!
