Happy Friday, Year 5!
In Maths this week, we dived into some exciting challenges with decimals. We put on our problem-solving hats and tackled real-life scenarios involving decimal numbers. It was a bit of a brain workout, but you pushed through brilliantly and came up with clever solutions. We also levelled up our skills by learning how to multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100, and even 1000! It's like having a place value superpower -- perfect for dealing with money, measurements, and data.
In English, we continued learning about instructional texts and explored the skills and techniques we'll need for our own survival narratives. In spelling, we became word detectives as we investigated the 'shus' sound spelled '-cious'. We discovered how this spelling pattern can transform nouns into adjectives -- like turning space into spacious! Hopefully, we'll spot and use this in our writing soon.
In RE, we learned about Jochebed, Moses' mother from the Old Testament. We discussed the brave and difficult choice she had to make to save Moses' life -- a powerful story of love and courage.
In our second HeartSmart lesson from the unit 'No Way Through Isn't True', we reflected on how being HeartSmart means knowing who you are becoming on the inside -- and that this is even more important than the success people see on the outside. We talked about how the character and values we grow in our hearts will guide us through every part of life. This reminded us of John 10:10: "I've come that they may have life, and life to the full."
In PE, we enjoyed more diamond cricket, sharpening both our fielding and batting skills -- your teamwork and encouragement made the games even better!
On Wednesday, we were back at Wybunbury Moss for our next John Muir session -- this time for bug hunting and pond dipping! We spotted lots of fascinating insects and even found a tadpole in the pond. Some of us were lucky enough to catch a damselfly too -- what a wonderful morning exploring nature.
In Art, it was time to reflect and evaluate. We spent time critiquing our final house models, discussing what worked well and what we might improve. You gave feedback with such thoughtfulness and kindness -- a true sign of growing artists. Remember, feedback is a gift that helps us grow!
In Science, we had a blast learning about irreversible changes. We carried out a fun experiment by mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar -- the fizzing reaction was amazing to watch! Through this and other examples, we discovered that some changes can't be undone and result in completely new substances. A great hands-on way to understand chemical reactions!
In Geography, we learnt about why the Amazon Rainforest is so important. It produces 20% of the world's oxygen and is home to millions of unique plant and animal species. However, we also learned about deforestation -- the clearing of the rainforest for cattle farming, palm oil plantations, and logging. We had a thoughtful discussion about how we can help protect this beautiful and vital part of our planet -- from making mindful choices to raising awareness.
Finally, in Computing, we began our new unit on selection in programming. We revisited what we've learned about selection and explored how conditions control what happens in a program. Using Scratch, we worked hands-on with code blocks and modified existing programs to see how different conditions changed their behaviour. This helped us understand how decisions are made in code -- perfect for creating fun and interactive games or quizzes!
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend,
