As writers, we began the week by exploring a new example text which showed a rich selection of vocabulary. We also got to grips with modal verbs--learning how they can express the possibility of something happening. We have then moved on to gather ideas for a character reaction. We thought about how the astronauts would feel about stepping on to the moon for the first time. We gathered lots of great ideas and wrote brilliant paragraphs! We even learnt a new year 5 skill of parenthesis which means adding extra info to our writing with brackets – like secret messages for our readers! It has been lovely to see you having a go at using it in your writing this week. At the end of our week, we have explored the structure and language features used within the example text.
In Maths, our understanding of 5, 6, and 7-digit numbers is going from strength to strength. We've been practising how to write these large numbers in words and have been comparing and contrasting their values--especially those in the hundreds of thousands and millions. We have about adding and subtracting powers of 10 all the way up to 1,000,000. We have also learnt about standard partitioning.
Our new enquiry question in Geography is Where do our goods come from? We kicked off the topic with a fantastic first lesson, exploring what trade means to us in everyday life. As a class, were introduced to key vocabulary such as exports and imports, and we enjoyed investigating where some of our everyday items--like bananas--are imported from.
In French, we have begun a new unit of work focused on our school. Our first lesson was titled What is in our classroom? We practised our pronunciation while asking and answering questions such as Où est la porte? and worked hard to identify and use the phrase Il/Elle est là correctly, depending on whether the object was masculine or feminine.
In RE, we began by naming the sacred texts of the world; we then focused on the Bible. We discovered that the Bible is a treasure trove, comprised of two major sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament with a total of 66 books; we realised that the Bible is like a library full of different genres. We enjoyed exploring the names of the different stories within the Bible and considering why the Bible is often referred to as a library of books.
Our first forest school session in Year 5! We started our forest school session this week in the forest school shed by exploring Mr Hadfield's exciting resources. We then enjoyed building shelters for characters we were given. We thought about adding everything our character would need – a toilet, bed, kitchen etc. Later on in our morning, we then built fires and toasted marshmallows.
During our history lesson, we utilised both iPads but mostly books to carry out research, which enabled us to gather a wealth of facts about the lives of people during the Victorian era. It was fascinating to discover how daily life varied between different classes and how advancements during this period shaped the world we live in today. We also used our knowledge of timelines to work out how long ago the Victorian era took place.
In our second Art lesson, we learnt about mark making. We went back to the work of Kevork Mourad to see how he had incorporated this into his pieces. We were amazed to look at examples of work showcasing only marks. Using our sketching pencils, we enjoyed spending time exploring how we can make a variety of marks like those of the work we studied. We focused on changing our grip, speed and pressure to vary our work.
In PHSE, we looked at the difference between being bossy and being a leader. We talked about how being bossy isn't HeartSmart as it is a way to try and control others, and we thought about how on a good day, the only person we can control is ourselves! We realised that it is important to be a leader rather than a boss because it means we are being HeartSmart as we are considering the person as well as the task. This made us think about the phrase: Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31.
What a busy week. You have all worked really hard and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
