Happy Friday everybody! It has been a wonderful Friday because today we went down to church to share our Harvest Celebration Service with friends, family and the local community. We had been practising hard, so it was wonderful to have the chance to sharing it with you all. The service was beautiful, and many people commented on how well everybody spoke and sang. Those of you with words spoke clearly which allowed the importance of the message to be heard by all. If you didn't have words, you still played a huge role because you sang your hearts out. It sounded amazing. Well done, Year 5.

Back at school, we were busy with our using lessons. Although, something truly exciting happened . . . we received a letter from NASA! It invited us to write a Mission Log chronicling our adventures to the moon! How exciting is that? During our lessons, we were introduced to a range of new vocabulary words related to space and the Apollo missions. It was wonderful to see you all engaging with the meanings of these words and understanding how to use them in context. By Friday, we were busy conducting research into the Apollo 14 and Apollo 17 missions, which provided us with an abundance of fascinating information.

In Maths, we continued learning about addition and subtraction. In particular, we focused on using the inverse operations to help us check our working out. We then moved on to answering multi-step word problems. This took teamwork and resilience – we also found that using the bar model was a great top tip.

For our Book Club sessions this week, we have been looking at a poem called ''Song of the Shirt' by Thomas Hood. In the poem, we learnt about the poignant realities of the Victorian poor.

For our afternoon we have once again covered a variety of subject. At the beginning of the week, it was time for music. During our lesson, as you had so kindly asked for us to, we listened to some songs by an American Christian rock band called Skillet. We then moved onto our main lesson. We revisited the song we learnt last week and used a hard copy of the sheet music to help us play along following the tempo and structure of the piece.

In French this week, you built on your knowledge of counting in tens from the previous week to count "de zero a cent." What a great job you did team. Keep up the good work.

In R.E, we approached the end of our journey through the Bible. In this lesson, discussed how the bible provides guidance for daily life. We read different passages from the Bible, honing our reading skills to summarize their meanings, and deliberated on which books we believed held the most important messages.

In this week's art lesson, we refamiliarised ourselves with the wonderfully atmospheric poem 'The Grotlyn.' As we listened, we took time to really think about the colours the poem evokes. It was fascinating to hear your interpretations and feelings about the imagery in the poem, and I appreciate how thoughtfully you considered the emotions tied to the various hues. Following this, we dove into the world of colour mixing! You have all done a fantastic job experimenting to create unique shades that will be used in our zines – our mini-booklets that will house our monoprints.

In HeartSmart this week, we learnt that being HeartSmart means recognising and being grateful for the people around us who cheer us on and encourage us. We thought about someone who does that for us and then wrote a beautiful letter of gratitude to them. We were very excited when we found out that we would be able to give our letters to the people we wrote them for. Your letters were so beautifully written, and I hope the people you gave them to enjoyed reading them. We linked this to the Bible quote: 'Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.'Philippians 1:3

In our Forest Schools this week, we continued learning about plants. This time, we learnt about the life cycle of a flowering plant. We learnt the technical terms: germination, flowering, pollination, fertilisation and seed dispersal. Finally, it was time for fire building and toasting marshmallows! Yummy!

Thank you for another brilliant week, Year 5. I hope you have a fantastic weekend,

Miss Pennance
