What a fantastic week of learning and exploring we have had in Year 5! From tackling new challenges in Maths and developing our report writing skills in English to starting exciting new projects in DT and RE. You have shown focus, curiosity, and teamwork in everything you have done, so let's take a look at all the brilliant things we've been up to this week!
In Maths this week, we focused on converting units of measure. We started by converting metric units, then moved on to learning about imperial units and how to convert between the two. You worked hard to understand how different units connect and practised applying your knowledge to real-life problems. We also began converting units of time, showing fantastic focus as we tackled each new challenge. Great work, Year 5!
In English this week, we have started planning and writing our chronological reports about Wybunbury Moss. You have worked hard to organise your ideas clearly while using key skills such as parenthesis and technical vocabulary to add detail and interest to your writing. It's been fantastic to see your knowledge of the Moss shining through in your reports!
We started a new RE topic this week. In this topic, we are focusing on 'changing the world'. For this lesson, we talked about the things we would want to change. Our four main priorities were: protecting animals, climate change, preventing food poverty and deforestation. We considered why these are important things. Your ideas about this were very moving. Next, we had six question stems: who, what, when, where, why and how. We created a range of questions – using these sentence stems – about the topics we had talked about. Some questions included:
a. Why does deforestation happen?
b. Who is responsible for climate change?
c. When did climate change start?
d. How do we stop food poverty?
e. Where does deforestation happen?
f. What can we do to stop animals getting hurt?
Next week, we are going to be carrying out some research to see if we can answer these questions.
In DT this week, we started an exciting new project: creating wooden truss bridges! We are using our understanding of bridge structures from our previous lessons alongside our measuring, sawing, and gluing skills to build our bridges carefully. We talked about safety points when using the saws and glue guns and worked sensibly and safely throughout. We can't wait to finish them next lesson!
In history, we continued learning about the Ancient Maya civilisation. In this lesson, we learnt that they used to play a game which is very similar to the football we play today! It's called pok-ta-pok. We were fascinated by the rules and that archaeologists are finding rubber balls that were actually used by Mayans to play the game! Amazing! Using the historical skills of comparing and contrasting, we identified the similarities and differences between the too.
We have also had our RSE lessons. In our lessons, we learnt about puberty and how our bodies are going to change physically and emotionally. We talked about the importance of hygiene and that it is important to remember we are all different, so the way we experience puberty may be different to the way someone else does and this is ok. The questions you asked and the contributions you made were fantastic. I am so impressed with how sensible you all were. Well done, Year 5.
In science, we then learnt about the next stage of development called late adulthood. We learnt about the changes that happen in old age and identified some misconceptions about old age too.
In PE, we have been practising bowling with an off spin. We discussed the purpose of putting a spin on your ball when bowling to try and get the ball to change direction when it bounces. This makes it more challenging for the batsman so is an important skill in cricket. We went through some drills before playing some matches and putting our bowling spins into practice. We played rounders too for those who wanted a change.
It has been wonderful to see you all working so hard, showing respect, enthusiasm, and kindness in every lesson this week. You have impressed me with your curiosity in your learning, your teamwork when tackling challenges, and the maturity you have shown in our discussions. I am so proud of each and every one of you.
Hope you have a lovely weekend,
Miss Pennance
