Measuring temperature and metres below sea level gave us lots of opportunities to explore negative numbers in maths this week. We used number lines to identify missing values and applied our knowledge to bridge through zero to find the difference between negative numbers. We then moved on to learn about Roman Numerals. We recapped Year 4 learning of numbers to 100 and then learnt about representing numbers to 10,000. We can now write these numerals as well as solve problems with them.
In English, our understanding of technical vocabulary is growing through role play, watching NASA experts discuss moon rock, and exploring the meanings of new words and phrases. We have been practising writing sentences using this new vocabulary. We have then moved on to research Apollo 12 and gather information to use in our own mission log. We have also learnt about using formal language instead of informal language to write our report. At the end of the week, we also focused on the structure we would use within our own piece of writing.
We have enjoyed reading our Big Cat books this week.
Our spelling focus this week was on the suffix '-ible'.
We celebrated our growing knowledge of trade at the start of our Geography lesson this week. We are using the new vocabulary with confidence. Using images that showed how coffee is produced, manufactured, distributed, and sold to consumers, we worked together to sequence the process.
In Computing, we completed our work on digital systems, linking order points (inputs), warehouses (processes), and collection points (outputs). We then spent time reflecting on how to stay safe online.
In our French lesson this week, we learnt about naming items in our pencil case.
During our Heartsmart lesson, we thought about how we canprotect ourheart. We learntthat everythingwe see is recorded in the brain and can effect our behaviour and attitude. When we watch something positive andencouraging, the effect can be good, but when we watch something negative and violent, the effect can be not sogood. Something seen can never be unseen. We thought about this and our task was to design a watch that we would like to wear (maybe one that syncedup with their SMART HEART – like a smartphone). Our app would alert us every time we watched or sawsomething that isn't 'good' for us. Let the peace that Christ gives control your thinking.Colossians 3:15
In our RE lesson this week, we focused on what Christians learn from messages from the Bible. We looked at 6 different messages from the Bible and reflected on what this tells Christians. We considered Christian values and other Bible stories that have a clear message to follow.
In our forest school session this week, we learnt about plant pollination and how flowering plants can reproduce as part of their life cycle. The children enjoyed role playing the process of pollination. We also enjoyed time in forest school to build our own dens as well as building fires.
In our Science lesson, we followed up our Science learning and learnt more about life cycles. We focused on learning about the life cycles of humans as well as flowering plants.
In Music this week, you worked really hard on improvising and composing in your music lesson. You also sang The Ghost Parade and modelled actions to compliment the lyrics. You are working hard, keep it up!
We enjoyed sharing our Harvest service with everyone at church this week. Thank you for everyone that came. Year 5, you delivered a fantastic service alongside Year 6 and I am really proud of each of you.
