Happy weekend, Year 5. I hope you're all having a lovely Saturday.

In maths this week, we've been focusing on subtracting fractions, and I have been so impressed with your engagement! We began by recapping how to find common denominators, a crucial skill for solving these problems. It's great to see how well you've grasped the idea of keeping the denominator the same when subtracting--a tricky concept that you're now handling with confidence.

Over in English, Miss Griffiths has been helping you unpick the structure and language of a formal report. Together, we worked hard to identify its key features as we read through an example. By Friday, you had taken the first step in planning the opening paragraph of your very own reports, and I can't wait to see what you create next!

In Book Club, we re-joined Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. This week, we explored extracts to help us imagine what a Victorian Christmas might have been like. It was fascinating to realise that, in many ways, their celebrations were similar to our own. We also took time to reflect on how Scrooge's character transforms from the beginning of the story to the end--a brilliant example of personal change.

During R.E, we thought about the true meaning of Christmas and reflected on whether our modern celebrations match that message. It was really interesting to discover how many of our traditions and the symbols we use today can be traced back to the nativity story.

In art, we picked up where we left off with our zines! Since it had been a little while, we re-read the poem to remind ourselves of the theme before moving on to the exciting task of designing and creating our front covers. I loved seeing your creativity shine through!

Music lessons had us strumming away on our ukuleles again. After recapping chord C, we moved on to learning chord F. This new chord challenged us to stretch our fingers and perfect our playing positions. By the end of the lesson, we were able to play chord F along to a song called Hey You! Well done for sticking with it!

In PE, we continued with tag rugby, and you brought fantastic energy to the lesson. We warmed up by trying to grab as many tags as possible before recapping the pop pass. Then, we introduced pocket passing, practising in pairs while stationary. Once we were confident, we moved on to group work, where you focused on making successful passes and catches without dropping the ball.

Switching gears to geography, we delved further into our study of trade by exploring supply chains. I was thrilled to see how engaged you were as we discussed the journey food takes to get to our local supermarkets. From suppliers to manufacturers, distributors to retailers, and finally to consumers, you did an excellent job using these new key terms to describe the supply chain of bananas.

In computing, we took our first steps into storyboarding. Using a premade storyboard that included scripts and details about filming techniques, you worked brilliantly to create your own videos. I can't wait to see how these skills develop in future lessons!

This week's PHSE lesson focused on the people who help us. We talked about the importance of asking for help until our worries or problems are heard. We also learnt about Childline, a place we can turn to for support. This links beautifully to the Bible quote: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it" (Proverbs 4:23).

Finally, in science, we built on our understanding of forces. After recapping water resistance, we moved on to learning about friction. We discussed our ideas and prepared for next week's experiment, where we will investigate how friction acts on different objects. I'm looking forward to seeing the results!

Finally, we enjoyed a visit from drama students from South Cheshire Collage this week. They came to put on a production of 'Where The Wild Things Are'. It was brilliant to watch them and we all has lots of laughs.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. Keep up the great work--you're doing brilliantly!
