It has been another very busy week for Year 5!

This week, we have been busy with sporting activities because this week we have had Sports Day.  We were so excited about Sports Day as it has been a long time since we were last able to do one. For us to fit in all our wonderful activities, our Sports Day stretched across two days. We did our field events on one day and our track events on the other. Wednesday was our field events day. You took part in javelin, shot put, standing long jump and cross country. You all tried your hardest and you showed great sportsmanship too. On Thursday, the great sportsmanship continued during our track events.  It was wonderful that our family were able to join us to help cheer us on too.  During the tract events, you took part in four races: the obstacle, the bean bag, the sprint and the relay.  If you weren't taking part in the race, you sat and cheered your team on.  It was a wonderful day and well done to everyone who took part.

During the rest of the week, we have been working hard on our Study Work Books.  You have been carefully crafting and working to create beautiful pages.  We also finished our art unit on Georgia O'Keeffe by painting our own flowers.  You used acrylic and then this week you  added detail with oil pastels. They are so beautiful that we will be using them for our Study Work Book front covers.

We have also been busy with science.  In our lesson this week, we learnt about the life cycle of a bird. We learnt about the different stages and learnt a new word 'fledgling'. When a bird is in the fledgling stage, they are getting ready to leave their nest.  We decided that this was similar to a mammal's adolescent stage.

D.T was another one of our focuses this week.  In our D.T lesson, we learnt about the five food groups.  We worked together to recall our prior knowledge and then went on to find out why each of the groups is an important part of a human's daily food in take.  We also realised that foods can belong to more than one category.

In maths, we have been learning about polygons.  We recapped the three key features that a shape must have for it to be classed as a polygon.  Next, we took a closer look at triangles and quadrilaterals.  Finally, we finished the week off by looking at the features of a regular polygon.  In English, we finished our shared write about the Amazon rainforest and then used this to continue making our iMovies in Computing.

In PHSE this week, you worked with Miss Holland to complete two units in our HeartSmart lesson. The first unit focused on how we learn to receive feedback. You discussed why feedback is important and how feedback can affect relationships. You knew that there are two types of feedback – positive feedback and growing feedback. Growing feedback allows us to grow and move forward. If we trust the person who is providing us with the feedback, our response will be a receptive one. For your second lesson, you looked at the risks associated with alcohol use in young people. You talked about the risks you knew were associated with alcohol, and why you thought people drink alcohol. You watched a film made by Drinkaware and were surprised to hear that our brains don't stop growing and developing until we reach the age of 25! To end your lesson, you used a drama technique called 'decision alley' where you explored arguments for and against drinking alcohol in different situations. You had three scenarios to consider. As each character (or should we say Miss Holland!) walked through decision alley, you had to take it in turns to offer opposing advice. When the character reached the end of the alley, they had to make a decision about what they thought the character should do. Would each character – fix it, find out or fit in? Finally, you discussed the importance of having a trusted adult both at home and in school and that you can talk to this adult if you are worried about alcohol either for ourselves or for someone else you know.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, and I hope to see you at our 'Picnic and Pimms' event tomorrow,

Miss P
