It was brilliant to welcome you all back to school on Wednesday and into our new classroom.
We settled in really quickly, enjoyed sharing our highlights from Summer and set ourselves up to take on our new Year 5 tasks.
We have started our new unit of maths this week. We have learnt about understanding the value of 6 and 7 digit number and even considering how big these numbers really are. We have worked on representing these number on place value grids and in digits.
Our new Writing focus this half term is a real hit with the class. We have loved finding out about our new text focused on the moon landings. We have so much knowledge to share. So far, we have enjoyed reading the vehicle text, understanding through vocabulary, exploring images of the moon and writing descriptive poems.
In reading, we gave out the big cat books and found a new challenge book.
We had our first Art lesson this week. We explored the concept of monotype print art. We looked at the work of Kevork Mourad. We enjoyed creating artists pages inspired by his work. We also learnt about the skill of monotype print.
In our first History lesson this week, we have learnt about the Victorians. We started by assessing what we already knew. We made lots of links to our crime and punishment learning in Year 4. We created a lengthy timeline of the history we have studied so far and found out when the Victorians started. We then learnt about Queen Victoria. We gathered research on her and created fact files in our books.
In our Computing lesson, we learnt all about what a system is by looking at an example of how a system works on a road bike. We discovered that a system is made up of parts or components that work together to complete a task. We enjoyed identifying the parts of the bike to explain how the brakes or gears work.
Our PE task focused on teamwork and developing our orienteering skills. We created a plan of action and used control points to identify countries from different continents.
We enjoyed our first wellbeing lesson this week focusing on what we love.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs Morris and Mrs Pointon
