Welcome back to the summer term at school! It's been a joy to see how enthusiastic and creative you've all been as we jumped into new learning and wrapped up a few things from last term.
We kicked off the week with an exciting visit from Mrs Tibbetts as part of our next Wybunbury Moss session. She taught us all about barn owls--did you know they live at the Moss? We discovered they produce something called an owl pellet. At first, we weren't too sure about dissecting them, but our 'ews' quickly turned into 'wows' when we started finding tiny bones and skulls hidden inside!
Maths lessons this week saw us dive into our new Statistics unit. We began by learning how to read and understand line graphs before moving on to reading tables and spotting patterns in the data. You've all been doing a brilliant job tackling questions and thinking carefully about the information in front of you.
In English, we've been planning and beginning our persuasive bargain letters, inspired by The Promise, which we read last term. You've been working hard to include emotive language, parentheses, and persuasive phrases to speak directly to the reader. We're halfway through and can't wait to finish these powerful pieces next week.
Reading has been all about developing our comprehension skills. We explored extracts from the DK Witness Amazon book, learning fascinating facts about the rainforest. You did a great job using evidence from the text to explain your answers and showing how you can interpret and analyse information clearly.
In RE, we began a brand new unit looking at what happened after Pentecost, with a focus on the story of St Paul. We kicked off by recalling the events of Pentecost and then explored Bible passages to learn how the Christian church began. It was brilliant to see so many of you confidently sharing your knowledge and enjoying the retelling games.
Geography lessons wrapped up our previous unit, where we completed an end-of-unit check to apply all we've learned about our local area. You used your understanding of Ordnance Survey maps, grid references and symbols to describe the exact location of our school in impressive detail.
In DT, we revisited the ingredients used in a classic Bolognese and discussed what we'd like to change or add for our own recipes. We also looked at nutritional information and used a smart spreadsheet to calculate the nutritional values of our dishes--great preparation for when we start cooking soon!
It was lovely to welcome Coach Beth this week for the start of our Athletics unit in PE. We kicked off with some exciting track events, including sprinting against the clock and working in teams for relay races. In your second PE lesson with Mrs Whittingham, you started a brand new Badminton unit and showed great energy and curiosity!
We also launched our new Music topic – Beatboxing! After forming your groups (shoutout to The Beat Lads, Dream Beats, Beatboxing Besties and The Brilliant Beats!), we watched an incredible video by The Beatbox Collective. Their sounds and rhythms amazed us all. You then chose scenes to recreate and next week, you'll plan your group roles – we can't wait to see what you create!
Computing wrapped up our work on Flat File Databases. We used everything we've learned in a real-life task--finding flights online. You used filtering and sorting tools to search through information, then created a PowerPoint to share your findings. It was great to see how our digital skills are useful in the real world!
Thanks for a brilliant start to the term, Year 5. Have a lovely weekend and I'll see you next week!
