Happy Friday, Year 5!

Our first full week back has been fantastic. One highlight was our fantastic class worship. Each of you played a special role, and I was so proud of how well you shared our message with everyone. During the worship, you shared the importance of conservation and explained what an ecosystem is. You also told us why we need to protect them to maintain balance in nature. Finally, we told everyone about our plans to help safeguard our lovely local environment. You all did an amazing job, and I couldn't be prouder of all of you! Well done, Year 5.

When we haven't been practicing for worship, we have been busy with out other lessons. In Maths, we have been focusing on long multiplication. We practiced how to lay it out correctly and realised the importance of knowing our times tables. Keep practicing your times tables at home as this will make our learning much easier.

We've dived straight into the exciting world of non-fiction books in Book Club this week. We've started exploring the DK Witness Space book, which is full of fascinating facts and visuals. We've been chatting about how the layouts of non-fiction texts play a crucial role in grabbing our attention. From engaging headings to intriguing images, it's all about making the information leap off the page!

This week in our English lessons, we've continued our exciting unit on narrative setting descriptions. We explored some beautiful pictures from the book FArTHER, which really sparked our imaginations! We also unpicked a fantastic example of a good narrative setting together. What makes it so special? Well, we discovered the magic of metaphors, and everyone got to write a lovely short piece that showcased what they'd learned. I'm super proud of all your creativity! Keep up the brilliant work, and I can't wait to see what we create next!

In our RE lesson, we've continued our exploration of our big question: "Why do Christians think Jesus is such a great teacher?" This week, we delved into the parable of the 'Widow's Gift.' We uncovered some wonderful messages about living a good life and the significance of small, generous acts.

In our HeartSmart lesson, we had an important chat about feeling lonely. It's something that everyone experiences from time to time, and we shared ways to cope with those feelings. I reminded everyone of the comforting Bible quote, "God is with you – wherever you may go and no matter what life brings." (Joshua 1:9) To cap off our session, we wrote beautiful poems that capture the essence of feeling loved and supported, no matter what.

We've had a fantastic time diving into two geography lessons that really got our brains buzzing this week. In our first lesson, we explored the topic of ethical trade. We discussed what ethical trade means and had a good think about who is most responsible for making sure it actually happens because it is important for us to understand where our products come from and how they impact the world around us. Then, in the second lesson, we really got to shine! We tackled the big question: 'How do we get our stuff?' By using all the knowledge we've gathered over the past 5 lessons, we traced the journey of a cocoa bean from Ghana all the way to the chocolate bars we find in our local supermarkets. It was fascinating to see how something so simple can travel so far and how many people are involved in bringing it to our shelves.

In PE, we focused on improving our dodgeball and hockey skills. In dodgeball, you focused on your dodging skills. You considered the importance of staying light on your feet and moving quickly whilst concentrating on the rest of the game. You worked on the skills involved by playing a few games in small teams before having a few whole class games of dodgeball to but your dodging skills into practice. In hockey, we recapped the skills from last week and then learnt about the Indian dribble and the push pass.

Towards the end of the week, we finished off last term's art project and we are very proud of our creations. We will be evaluating them next week. We have also nearly finished our beautiful stuffed toys.. It's been lovely to see the finished products coming together.

Thank you for a wonderful week. I hope you have a fantastic weekend, and I'll see you all on Monday.

Happy weekend,

Miss Pennance
