Year 4 you have shone in so many ways this week.

As writers, we wrote a setting description to describe an Icelandic town, Arthur's town. We thought about our description language alongside writing different conjunctions to extend our sentence ideas. We have then moved on to analyse the text. We have found examples of plural nouns, plural possessive apostrophes, expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, conjunctions and so much more. We have also learnt about the structure and features within this style of writing. In our final lessons, we have worked on developing a character description from the text. We chose to look particularly at the wolf – Fenrir. We gathered images and found phrases and adjectives to describe the wolf. We role played Fenrir in the town and asked the other characters in the text to explain what they saw and how they felt when they saw the wolf. This gave us some great ideas for our character description. We completed the role on the wall task using the outline of a wolf to record our ideas.

In Maths this week, we have focused on developing our knowledge of column multiplication. We have learnt about multiplying two and three digits by 1 digit. We practiced this to ensure we were fluent and have also worked on answering two and three step problems involving multiplication and addition and subtraction.

We have been introduced to the book, World of whales in our reading lessons this week. This is a beautifully illustrated no. Fiction book and we have enjoyed finding our all about these amazing mammals.

In our HeartSmart lesson this week, we completed our reflection of unit 2: Don't forget to let love in. We thought about how we have grown throughout this unit. 'The second command is this: Love your neighbour as you love yourself.' Mark 12:31.

In Geography, our challenge was to find out about human geography in the Americas. We looked at different settlements and a great population density map to discover why people chose to live in certain areas in the Americas. We also located capital cities using an atlas.

We had our first brief brass lesson this week. We really enjoyed Kevin – our music teacher. He showed us some of the instruments that we will start to learn to play last week and taught us how we would be able to make a sound using our lips and our breathing. We are really excited for next week!

We started our new History unit this week. We started our lesson by thinking about what we already know about Crime and Punishment. I was blown away by the knowledge we already have. We then went on to consider what a crime is. You could think of lots already but then we asked ourselves whether crime is the same now as it was in the past. We thought about the word punishment and what examples we knew of this. We are really looking forward to stepping back in time to hear about crime and punishment throughout history!

In RE this week, we reflected on challenges we have faced and overcome. We thought about the qualities you needed to overcome these. We then listened to the story of David and Goliath. We thought about how David needed faith, courage, bravery and resilience. We wrote newspaper reports recounting the events.

In Science this week we started our new unit of States of Matter. We learnt about the properties of solids, liquids and gases. We then looked at different materials and organised these based on their properties.

During Art this week, we looked at the work of Thomas J Price. He is a sculptor who challenges ideas about who should be commemorated as sculptures. This prompted a fantastic discussion around who we would commemorate. We also payed particular attention to his use of plinths within his work. We are using all of this work to develop our own ideas.

Our new unit of learning within Design Technology has enabled us to think about our prior knowledge and skills linked to structures. Our specific focus this half term will be designing pavilions.

We have continued to practice some YoungVoices songs this week.

Maths.co.uk homework has been set.

Have a wonderful weekend.
