We are working hard to exchange as we add 3 digit numbers using place value charts and counters.

Welcome back to our second half term together Y3 and what a lovely week we have had. Forest school adventures, Singfest singing, one sneaky Fox, all things Roman and lots inbetween!

In maths this week, we started our second addition and subtraction unit. Our big question this week...to exchange or not to exchange?! We worked on adding and subtracting three digit numbers from three digit numbers and used our number bond to ten knowledge to decide whether we needed to exchange or not. Well done Y3, you worked really hard.

In English, we found a charred feather and a picture of a mystery animal's eyes in the classroom. We decided these were clues to our next story. We made our predictions and then the new story of 'Fox' by Margaret Wild was revealed. We read it together and then created a smilie poem all about Fox and his sneaky, cunning ways. We investigated some of the key themes from the story, mainly deceit, loyalty, friendship and betrayal. Our example text features a Bear and a Fawn, and we enjoyed getting to know some of the new vocabulary. We worked carefully as a team to explain the new vocabulary to each other.

In our history lessons, we got fully emerged into the Romans! We learnt all about the successful invasion in 43CE and why the attempted invasions before that weren't successful! We learnt about different emperors and important people from the Roman times and the Celts and Boudicca too! We also enjoyed some horrible histories songs to help us along our Roman's journey!

This week saw our first forest school session with Mr Hadfield. Mr Hadfield commented how impressed he was with the engagement of the children and how knowledgeable they were too. Well done Y3. We learnt all about hibernation and we then got to work on the task set for us: build a hedgehog home. You thought about its location, how to disguise it from prey and how to make it look warm and cosy. Let's hope a little hedgehog family make it their home this winter.

Singfest saw us learning the new medley of songs all about the weather. An email will be sent out this week with more info for parents about this event.

As readers, we have worked hard to build our fluency to read individually. We have enjoyed listening to your wonderful reading this week.

In RE, we thought about how we would feel if we are asked to do something we might not want to do? As a class we explored our feelings and wrote these as individual responses.

In our PSHE lessons we have continued to look at some of the effects of smoking on the body. We have also learnt about passive smoking and the laws around smoking. We learnt that the government are working towards bringing in laws that will create a smoke free generation. To encourage the government to do so, we wrote letters to Mr Starmer, our Prime Minister, to explain which laws should be brought in.

We have completed a fitness challenge in PE this week. We have been challenged to complete as many reps of different exercises as we can in 60 seconds whilst recording our own results so we can see how our fitness improves over the year. We will repeat this in the in spring term and the summer term in order to compare our results. We had the responsibility for counting and recording our own reps so it is a personal challenge and we are on our own journey to improve our fitness.

We hope you have had a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Shaul and Mrs Pointon.
