We came back from half term to a new story to read! Our English lesson had lots of clues for us to find out more about the story. We saw pictures of a city, shops, busy traffic, rainforests and heard noises of rainforests, a busy city and an ocean in a ferocious storm. Our tables were covered in buttons, flowers, a child's suit and leaves. We made our predictions of what we thought the story was about and then had the grand reveal. The story is called Jemmy Button and we explored all about his life. Can you tell your adults what happened in the story and how he got his name Jemmy Button? We then explored the example text and the new vocabulary for this unit of work. We also recapped our knowledge of when to use an and a using vocabulary from our Jemmy Button story.
We linked one of our English lessons this week to our class worship and courageous advocacy work all about our four famous people who are well known and well respected in the environmental world. You got into your groups and wrote all about your famous person, namely David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg, Jane Goodall and Poppy Okotcha. You then used your knowledge to answer the question who are they? What do they do? and What can we learn from them? Your answers then formed part of the class worship and were written up as lines to share with the school and parents.
In our spellings lessons this week, we explored words with the c sound but spelt with the ch letters, like school, character and scheme. We also recapped the Y1 and Y2 spelling words which you have been using so confidently in your writing.
In science lesson this week, we continued to learn all about light and in particular shadows. We explored how shadows are formed and when we would see shadows and when we might not. We then started on making our shadow puppet theatres. You did so well listening to the instructions to make these and then created your puppets to go in the theatres. We are going to link this to our stop motion animation project and complete this next week.
On Wednesday, we had our first swimming lesson of this half term and the new bus driver commented on your lovely manners and behaviour which made me and Mrs Parker very proud. Your positive can do attitudes are really shining in your swimming lessons and it is a pleasure to take you each week.
In maths this week, we have finished our measurement unit on length and perimeter. We learnt all about what perimeter is and how to work out the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. We have also begun our new unit on fractions and we made great steps forward in our learning to recap the language of fractions from our Year 2 work. We worked hard to remember language like numerator and denominator to explain that a unit fraction is a fraction where the numerator is 1. Next week, we will continue on with our next unit on fractions. Maths homework has come home this week as a paper copy.
We have been busy practising our class worship words and songs and we can't wait to show you all on Tuesday next week at 3pm. The children have been sent home with words to practise.
As part of our Health and Safety week learning, we have learnt about the difference between a burn and a scald and what we can do to help. We took part in a practical activity to understand how to help someone who may have a minor burn or scald. We remembered the steps to cool the wound under running water, reassure the person, and then use cling film or plastic to cover the wound. We also did a role play to then ring 111 to ask for advice. A huge well done Year 3, this was very impressive.
In music this week, we performed one of our SingFest songs called 'Eco Warriors.' We added extra actions to the song and we will look forward to sharing this during our class worship next week.
In our Kick PE session, we were worked on invasion game skills, including throwing, dodging and catching. To put it this into practice, we improved our aiming by throwing through hula hoops, and we worked on our over arm and underarm throws.
