Dear Parents and Carers,

This week in Year 3 has been full of energy, effort, and excitement! The children have tackled new challenges in maths, written stunning narratives in English, and discovered fascinating facts about fossils in science. What a brilliant week of learning it's been!

Maths

This week in maths, we continued our learning about blank number lines. The children practised finding the midpoint, quarter, and three-quarter points to help them place numbers accurately. We then progressed to working with scaled number lines that had different increments. The children used their reasoning skills to find the difference between the start and end points and then divided that number by the number of increments. We focused particularly on increments of 2, 4, 5, and 10. The children have shown great perseverance and growing confidence with these trickier challenges!

English

It has been our Big Writing Week--and what an incredible week it's been! After weeks of preparation, we finally started to piece our learning together and apply everything we have been taught in our 'Approaching Threat' narrative, inspired by The Iron Man. The children's stories are shaping up beautifully, filled with ambitious vocabulary, powerful similes, and vivid descriptive imagery. Mrs Roney has been absolutely blown away by the quality of writing and creativity shown across the class! It has been lovely to see such differing interpretations.

Science

In Science, we explored the fascinating world of fossils! The children learned about four different types: mold, cast, carbon, and trace fossils. We also examined some real-life fossils and even looked at some gems and crystals, linking nicely to last week's reading text. The class were captivated by the idea that fossils can tell us stories about life millions of years ago!

RE

This week in RE, we learned about the Hindu festival of Pongal. We compared this celebration with the Christian Harvest Festival and the Jewish Sukkot Festival, noticing both similarities and differences. The children were fascinated to learn that during Pongal, Hindu's boil rice (also called pongal) and, when it boils over, they shout "Pongalo Pongo!" to symbolise prosperity and abundance. We had lots of fun spotting pictures of Pongal and seeing who could notice first and chant "Pongalo Pongo!" the quickest!

PE

Our PE lessons this week focused on marking and understanding the roles of attackers and defenders. The children also considered which part of the foot is best used when passing or striking the ball. We played a mini match of 5 a side and practiced applying these skills. Their teamwork and strategic thinking are really improving--great work, Year 3!

French

In French, our focus was "How are you?" (Comment ça va ?). The children learned to ask and respond to questions about how they are feeling, using different phrases. We finished the lesson with a fun 'Doctors and Patients' role-play game--one partner played the doctor and asked how the patient was feeling, and the other responded in French. C'était fantastique!

PSHE

It has been lovely to reflect on our PSHE learning this week. We explored how we can care for our own hearts and the hearts of others. This brings our Get Heartsmart unit to a close and connects beautifully to the Bible quote: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." -- Proverbs 4:23.

Geography

In geography, we worked hard to consolidate our learning about lines of latitude, using them to locate the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. We also learned how to identify the Arctic and Antarctic Circles.

This week, we weren't quite ready to begin our castle-building project in DT as we're running low on materials. Please continue to let your children rummage through your recycling bins and bring in any useful items by Tuesday such as egg boxes, cereal boxes, and toilet or kitchen roll tubes. A huge thank you to everyone who has already sent in bits and bobs – your contributions make such a difference, and we can't wait to get started on our castles this week!

We've also really enjoyed looking at the fabulous 'Bingo Grid' homework shared on Seesaw over the last couple of weeks -- it's been wonderful to see the children's creativity and interest towards their topic shining through!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Warm regards,

Mrs Roney.
