What a fantastic start to the new school year! Our Year 3 children have settled in beautifully and spent the week engaging in lots of fun and enjoyable activities which have allowed the children to get to know Mrs Roney, settle into Year 3 and immerse themselves into their new and exciting topic. It has been wonderful to see what a lovely, friendly, and supportive class they are – each and every child has brought a smile to my face this week as they have displayed exceptional manners and a have adopted a keen enthusiasm and hunger to learn across all areas of the curriculum.

We started the week with a fun and challenging STEM project, building towers using spaghetti and different-sized marshmallows. This activity really tested and strengthened our teamwork skills, as everyone had to share their ideas, contribute to the planning, and work together to improve their designs through evaluation and collaboration. Our outcomes were fabulous and, in our opinion, were as strong as Hadrian's Wall!

In History, we began our exciting new topic, The Romans. We explored the design of Roman shields, referred to as scutum in the Roman period, learning about the powerful symbols they carried – from the strength of the colour red to the might of the Roman eagle. The children thoroughly enjoyed working in groups to design, create and decorate their own cardboard shields with these meaningful symbols.

We also delved into Roman numerals, using them to crack secret codes and convert them into modern numbers – a great mix of history and maths!

In Art, we explored watercolour techniques, learning how to create gradient washes and adjust colour tones by manipulating the amount of water used. The children then used these skills to paint beautiful dream jars inspired by Roald Dahl's The BFG. Once their jars had dried, they wrote their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for Year 3 and beyond on the front. I am incredibly proud of the thoughtful and creative work produced and hope to support the children in achieving their dreams this year.

It has been a truly wonderful first week at Wybunbury Delves, and I can't wait to see what the rest of the term brings!
