What a fantastic full week we have had Year Two. Myself, Mrs Wainwright and Kim are so pleased with how well you have settled into Year Two and the effort you are putting into all of your learning. Each day you have made us smile and lifted our spirits! We just know it's going to be a great year ahead.

In English this week, we continued our learning around the story The River. You spent lots of time on sentence accuracy, focusing on how to use conjunctions in your writing. You learnt that a conjunction is a word that joins two sentences or ideas together, and you worked hard on using them to make your writing more detailed. We also practiced writing a little faster to help build stamina.

We looked closely at the character Tom and created a role on the wall to describe his personality and everything he sees on his journey down the river. You then used all of this to write a wonderful character description about him. On Friday, you were introduced to editing your own work using a green pen, learning what all of my marking symbols mean so that you can make improvements independently.

In reading, you were all assessed on your phonics understanding to see what sounds and skills you are confident with. You were then given a book carefully matched to your phonics level so you can practice and apply your learning. Next week, you will move into your new phonics groups where you will continue to build on your reading skills.

In maths, we have been focusing on place value to 100. You have been learning how to partition two-digit numbers using a part-part-whole model, which helped you to understand the value of each digit in a number – the first digit showing the tens and the last digit showing the ones. You used straws to represent tens and ones, which then helped you to use the dienes equipment to show these values on a place value grid. With this, you were able to solve addition sums such as 30 + 4 = 34 using the concrete resources. Later in the week, you moved on to patterns using place value and counting in steps of 10. You are now very confident counting in 10s, both forwards and backwards, and completing missing number grids that count in 10s. By Friday, you even learnt how to count in 10s starting from any number using a 100 square. I have given you this as your homework to help consolidate your learning further.

In your afternoon learning you have completed all sorts of activities. In RE, you carried on with your learning about the bible. You found out that the bible is like a library because inside it has 66 books. You found out that the old testament is about God and the creation of the world and the new testament is about Jesus. You created a beautiful display of all of the books you can find in the bible. This week you started your courageous advocacy, you found that we are going to complete the Archbishop young leaders award. You were introduced to Gracie our character who is going to help us to become leaders of perseverance, kindness, team work and action. In history, you looked at if cars are still the same as the cars that were first invented? You compared the first Benz car and a tesla to see how cars have changed. We also linked this learning to how Crewe is famous for the making of cars with the factory Rolls Royce which has now changed to Bentley. We loved looking through the pictures of these factories to see how cars are made. In heartsmart, you thought about power and what gives power e.g. turning the remote on will power up the TV. You thought about how you have the power to make good choices in life and you created a poster on this. You started your first music lessons with Mrs Chesters on Wednesday. You had PE with coach Beth where you focused on running skills. In PE with me on Friday, we focused on game skills and we loved playing the games of traffic lights and then the bumba master game where you focused on practicing your throwing and catching skills. In science, you started your topic on everyday materials and their uses. We learnt the difference between materials and objects. You understood that certain objects are made out of certain materials depending on their use. We then did an enquiry where we thought about what materials are suitable for outside and what materials are suitable for inside. You went on a hunt outside and inside to think about what objects there are and what they are made out of. We realised that paper, cardboard and fabric are not suitable for outside because they are not waterproof and they absorb water.

You have been superstars this week and I can't wait for next week already! Homework has been emailed to parents and you should have your sheet in your bags.

Have a wonderful weekend team,

Miss Haynes
