Year Two weekly newsletter

Back home  /  Our Classes  /  Year 2  /  Year 2 Newsletter

Your first week back for our last half term of spring has been fantastic, the warmer days are definitely helping.

In English this week, you embarked on an exciting mystery as you discovered clues hidden around the classroom. First, you found a flower pot with a key underneath it and a note. Then, you uncovered a suitcase filled with intriguing items—waistcoats, ties, belts, smelly slippers, a map, and even an elephant! Using these clues, you made predictions about what the story might be about. You then used the key to pretend to open a door, imagining where it might lead. In the next lesson, you finally uncovered the title of the book: Grandad’s Island! I read the story to you, and you were completely captivated, especially by the magical island where Grandad wanted to stay and the emotional journey Syd had to make back home on his own. You explored the vocabulary from the text, using it to form your own sentences. To finish, you created beautiful descriptive poems about Grandad’s Island, which were an absolute delight to read. Well done, Year Two!

In spellings, this week you have learnt how to spell using the soft ‘c’ rule. You were spelling lots of words like pencil, circus and city. You wrote lots of sentences using these words.

In Maths this week, you continued your exciting journey through multiplication and division. You explored multiplying by 2, using concrete resources like counters to help you visualise and understand the concept. You then moved on to dividing by 2, recognising how sharing and grouping can help solve division problems. A key part of your learning was discovering how to double and halve numbers, and you made a brilliant connection—realising that doubling is the same as multiplying by 2, and halving is the same as dividing by 2! This strong foundation will help you next week as we move on to multiplying and dividing by 10 and 5, as well as exploring odd and even numbers. Keep up the fantastic work!

This week we celebrated first aid week. We were visited by PC Nick who told us all about how to ring 999 if we had an emergency. We found out that you only ring them if you are in an emergency if not you can ring 111 to ask for advice. You were brilliant at listening to this important information and answering questions. You were given lots of different scenarios and you had to decide whether you needed to ring 999, 111, go to the pharmacist or leave the situation. It was interesting to see what your votes were and what you would do in these situations. You then also had a session on learning the difference between a bite or sting. You understood what the symptoms of a bite and sting are and how they are different. You then were able to look at which animals bit and which animals sting. You realised if an animal has teeth then they are able to bite and depending on how big the animal is and how sharp their teeth are will depend on how severe the bite is.

We have started our new topic in computing this week. We began learning how to make a tally chart and use it to collect data. This will help us create our pictograms in the coming weeks.

In DT this week, we started our new topic on Cooking and Nutrition, we learnt all of the different food groups and how they help our bodies.

This week we started our new Science topic on Animals Including Humans. We had a class discussion about our pets at home and how they grow and change over time. Then we played a sorting game where we matched a number of different offspring with their parent and noticed how some looked very similar and others very different.

In PE with Mrs Wittingham, you focussed on throwing and catching. We talked about the importance of keeping our eyes on the ball at all times when playing sports like cricket and rounders. Year 2 were able to show me how to throw overarm and how to be ready to receive a ball (soft knees, ready to move and hands close together in front of our chests). We played a few games to get ourselves used to the ball and challenged each other with some games.

With Coach Gabriel this week, Year 2 focused on developing their net and wall game skills. You worked hard on throwing and catching, improving your aim, and refining your coordination. To put your skills into action, you had lots of fun playing Cage Dodgeball and Fill the House (a catching relay game), where you applied everything you had learned. It was fantastic to see your teamwork, quick reflexes, and determination—well done, everyone!

A huge well done to you year 2! The effort you put in to perfect your final performance of ‘Be in a Band’ is just amazing! It was that good, you received a Head Teacher’s award as a class for your fantastic achievement!

In RE this week, you completed your end-of-unit assessment by working on your Questful Map. You answered a variety of thoughtful questions that helped you reflect on our big question: "Why does Jesus welcome everyone?" Your responses were incredibly mature and demonstrated just how much you had understood and retained from our lessons. I was so impressed with the depth of your thinking—well done, Year 2!

You have had a wonderful week and Miss Coomber our student teacher has loved teaching you this week too. She will continue to teach some of our lessons till the end of term.

Best wishes,

Miss Haynes
